World's Automaker Ranking
« on: April 14, 2007, 06:42:24 pm »
Does anyone have a list of the world's automakers, sorted by size (based on sales)?

For example,
1)  GM
2)  Toyota
3)  Ford
4) ?
5) ?
and so on...

Everyone knows the top, but I'd like to see the complete list.  :)

I believe Honda is # 3.

Honda is not even in the Top 5 ... but it's #1 in your driveway.  ;D :stick:  The brand is well known but their sales (and inventory) are relatively low.  They also don't have a bunch of brands under the same roof.  Acura is only present in Canada, the US, Mexico and China. (Japan in 2008)

Ranking - Manufacturer - 2005 Global Sales
http://cars.blogs.ca/2006/06/12/hyundai-kia-pass-nissan-to-become-worlds-sixth-largest-automaker/

1. General Motors - 8,381,805
2. Toyota Motor Corp. - 8,120,000
3. Ford Motor Co. - 6,208,700
4. Volkswagen AG - 5,242,793
5. DaimlerChrysler AG - 4,854,700
6. Hyundai Automotive Group - 3,715,095
7. Nissan Motor Co. - 3,597,748
8. PSA/Peugeot-Citroen SA - 3,390,000
9. Honda Motor Co. - 3,365,000
10. Renault SA - 2,533,428

Maybe they got the #8 spot in 2006 ... ???

Do the numbers include the brands under the same group?
for example, does GM's figure include GM + Saab + GM Daewoo?
Does VWAG's number include VW + Audi + Lamborghini + all other brands?
I'm asking this because Nissan and Renault are separate on the list..

I think these numbers include all the brands, even if the nomenclature is a bit inaccurate.  For example, the Ford Motor Co. is sometimes called the Premiere Automotive Group.  As for the whole Nissan/Renault thing - they don't seem to be under the same roof; instead they use the term "alliance".

"The Renault-Nissan Alliance is a unique group of two global companies linked by cross-shareholding, with Renault holding 44.3% of Nissan shares, while Nissan holds 15% of Renault shares."

If you put them together, they would steal the #4 spot from VW ... right under Ford. (assuming the 2006 numbers are similar)

Then that would be incorrect. PAG consists of Ford-owned Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo brands.

Since PAG is all Ford, it's probably included.  If you have numbers that shows the opposite ... please share.

Assuming that production equals sales ... just wondering?

Huh? All I'm saying is that it is not correct for Ford Motor Co. to be called PAG. You said "somebody" does that.

I just meant that since PAG is 100% owned by Ford, it will probably be included under the Ford Motor Co. umbrella.  But if you (or anobody) have seen any information/numbers that shows that they're not included, it would be interesting to know and see if the ranking is accurate.  It wasn't meant as an attack ... my apologies for the misunderstanding.

Honda sells more cars here in North America, they're sneaking up on Ford in monthly sales.

There are a few companies on that list that sell at a loss.  ::)  What's the point of counting total unit sales when some of those companies are going to disappear or shink in half.

Ranking should be all about PROFIT and sustainability.
