Removing Shifter Knobs
« on: April 12, 2007, 03:49:54 pm »

Trying to remove my stock shifter knob. I though they just twisted or screwed off but it doesn't seem to be doing that. If I pull down the leather pouch around the shifter I see it's attached to a steel pole. Covering the steel pole is a piece of plastic with 4 teeth on it. Then the shifter is over top of the plastic.

I seem to be missing something. Anyone have any ideas?

Try pulling straight up...don't hit yourself in the face, though.

Should I have to give it a fairly good tug to remove? I'm afraid im going to break something.
I read something about I.E. Subaru shifters having a reverse lock. Does that mean it might turn right to remove?

Some of them have a locking pin thru them which you have to push out with a small pointed tool. Some screw on and others are glued or permantly clamped on. I would ask the service manager of your make to give you the answer as tell him you are changing out the shifter for a better one. Even a good race shop who sells parts for it will know the answer.  :)

How about coloured pedals are they fairly idiot proof to install?

Yes they are fairly simple to do in comparison to the gearshifter. In the right colour they do look sharpe as well. Adds a nice interior touch as well.  :)

I figure they just put the pedal on top of the existing one, and have some brackets that fit behind the pedals.  It's not hard.

Pic of the knob?

Depends on the 'fit' type, some requires drilling for holes to fit thru.  :)

Car interior is black/monochrome. Looks pretty good together. Only down side, is its fairly cold feeling in the morning.
