This isn't the only Volvo out of line in pricing. Frankly the whole line-up is out to lunch in pricing. Recently I purchased a Passat 2.0T over the V70 because it was $12,000 less, with better interior and better engine. How can Volvo consider themselves luxury when they just came out with their first V8?

Let's put this little car in perspective. $40K + taxes/PDI/delivery is >$46K.
Now, factor in Canadian top marginal income tax rates.
Does this look like a $90K+ pre-tax purchase to anyone? That is, earning $90K to purchase a fast-depreciating/non-appreciating transportation appliance- this makes sense, how?
Bueller? Bueller??? I thought not.

I have to agree with most other comments. Thsi car is priced far to high for the target buyer. If you compare the C30 to the GTI with the same options the GTI will price a good bit cheaper. If the simpler (better) US speciifactions and pricing, based on current exchange rates, was used then they would have a potential winner here. |

How is it possible that after electricity has traveled through hundreds of miles of power line then hundreds of feet (or yards) of romex in our home, that changing the last three feet of wire with something exotic, expensive (cool looking, and packaged in a pricey box) is going to make a difference?

I hope its a lot more reliable than a co-worker's V40...that he quickly unloaded and took a big hit on.
Otherwise, very nice styling, but a bit too pricey. And does it come in nice high torque diesel? |

The Euro brands can no longer charge a big premium for their logos. Volvo has to go up against the Japanese brands and it is VERY tough. The Mazda/Toyota/Honda/Acura/Lexus/Infiniti/Nissan line up available to a buyer looking to spend $32-45K is HUGE with many terrific offerings. If you want to charge more than a comparable competitor, you better have your $hit together, which I don't think Volvo does. Like most other Euro brands, they have developed a less-than-stellar rep for quality, and they will have to fight hard to come back from that. BMW is working on it, Mercedes seems to be obsessed with finishing last in all quality rankings and VW sent tons of customers packing in the last few years. Saab has become a joke, with only the Saabaru holding any enthusiast interest.
So, what sets the C30 apart? Hatch body? Sure, that's a rare thing when the price gets past the Yais/Fit territory, but the Speed-3 and hatch-back-sedan 6 offer some nice stuff and good value. The A3 is pricey, but offers AWD. Subaru has wagons-hatches ranging from the WRX to Legacy GT.
With Volvo disappointing so many S40/V50 owners lately, I don't hold out much hope for the C30 either. Odd that the Mazda version (3) is well made and suffers far fewer problems than it's much more expensive cousin. |

I think it is the 2.4i that will ultimately sell well. |

It seems that whenever I see a Volvo I like, there's a VW that is at least as sporty, at least as luxurious, at least as safe, and $10,000 less. C30 versus GTI/Rabbit; S40/V50 versus Jetta/GLI, S60/V70 versus Passat, and C70 versus Eos. Volvo used to at least be able to take the high road on reliability, but the tidal wave of complaints about the S40/V50 has made me question even that.
I like the C30, but I just don't see what it offers over a GTI besides "Scandinavian character" instead of "Teutonic character." |

Nope, you can't, you need to get A3 3.2L V6 for Quattro, which starts at $45,000+. |

Volkswagen "is" the most affordable European brand in the North american market. Volvo "wants" to be considered in the same level/price range as the Germany luxury Big 3. |

I want to be a millionaire, but I'm not. The fact is, Volvo doesn't compete with the German Big 3, in prestige, in luxury, or in driving dynamics. Whoever Volvo wants to compete with, they ARE competitive with Volkswagen and perhaps Acura. |

I agree, the car is overpriced. However, that's the direction Volvo has been going for some time now. I would not buy this car despite how groovy it may look. |

How did his tester come without the 2-tone paint like it does on the volvo website? Is it cause this car has the $6k body kit?

$4000 body kit! And people think a $3000, 4 piece skirt package for the GTI is expensive! |

Ok, you guys must enlighten me. Besides the engine and general exterior looks of the GTI, what makes VW so attractive to people? I mean, it's always ranked near the bottom of reliability surveys, they are extremely costly to maintain, and that interior of theirs (which so many auto journalists love and call top notch) looks and feels like it was from the mid to late 90s. In fact, the current GTI/Rabbit/Jetta interior looks like my aunt's old '87 Jetta (except for the tach display lights and colour).
