2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab issues????
« on: April 04, 2007, 11:33:39 am »
I own a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab Lonestar Edition. This truck has been in the shop quite abit in the year I owned it for recalls, front end problems, most recent tie rod ends were worn out, and shocks are leaking. The truck has just 20,000kms on it. Never has seen a gravel road, or been off road. I drive the truck back and forth to work, tow my camper. Just wondering if anyone else that may own this model or know of anyone else that may have probs the same. Getting kinda ridiculous the amount of shop time this truck gets. Other than that, seats feel like I am sitting on a cardboard box. Weird thing is I like the truck.  ???

We have an '06 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport 4X4. Has about 18K on it, just shy of a year old.

It's been in for the 3-4 recalls. Other than that, the speedo and ABS had issues - speedo would bounce up and down to zero and back for a few moments, and the ABS light would come on at the same time... usually only after an hour or two on the highway. After a few days, the ABS light would go away. Dealer originally ordered a new speedo computer thingie, but now says the truck doesn't need it. We'll see, as we haven't been on a long trip with it in awhile.

It has the bucket seat delete, so the bench. I personally feel they're pretty flat, but can't really complain too much comfort wise. They're not uncomfortable. Sort of a canvass-style durable cloth, but I don't think the padding underneith is all that generous or of high quality - the outter material seems like it may become a tad loose on the seat, and I think the material covering the minimal seat cushion bulsters will start to crease. My impression is the seat foam will flatten more than it should.

But I have been surprised at how much I like the truck. Have gotten used to the dash materials and hard outter armrests, large controls (audio's not the best - does have AUX, but didn't upgrade either), HEMI V8 engine is quite responsive with the 5spd auto - on the highway mileage is decent with the MDS, rides really well and is quiet, and there are NO rattles or odd sounds from it, rear seat configuration with flip-up seats, under storage and folding flat floor is neat, etc. As for the negative, when handling it sort of lumbers and skips in the corners. Rear seat legroom should be greater, but don't need the size of the Mega Cab (tho apparently that may be the next one leased :hide:). Overall besides the recalls and the speedo/ABS issue, no others. Oh, the black plastic surround to the key on the accessory Mopar hard tonneau cover has miscoloured to light gray (presumably because of the sun or perhaps carwashes). It's being replaced.

My truck has the MDS Hemi. It is great on gas in warm weather. In cold weather not so good, but then again what is? I am a little concerned with the front end problems already considering the low mileage on the truck. I don't believe tie rods, and shocks should be failing this premature. The truck has a real nice ride to it, headlights are plenty bright as are the fog lamps. The truck has a tendancy to jump sideways when you hit a sharp bump on the highway which can attributed to the shorter wheelbase coupled with a stiff suspension. The last time I checked the gas mileage I got 25.3mpg on a 225 mile trip. I am talking imperial gallons. SO I can't really complain I suppose.

You may just have got some defective parts on assembly, tie rods without grease type of thing. It happens. One of my buddies has a new Quad cab, no complaints that I have heard. He likes the truck, especially the power.

I agree that maybe yours is a exception as several of my friends have them as well and they have had very good luck with them so far. One has the Diesel and the other has the smaller hemi but both are very pleased with the trucks so far. The only real complaints I have ever heard with the Dodge trucks is the gas milage is not as good as it could be. Dosen't matter which V8 engine it is they are hard on fuel.  :)

The Good-for-a-year tires don't seem to do the Dodge trucks any favours either. For past Dodges (Dakotas) when they were swapped out the truck performed much better.

They don't work that well on the GM's either as far as I am concerned.  :)

In 2006,Dodge changed the frt suspension in the 1500. It went from a torsion bar to a coil over set up. The new shocks in the 06-07's are brutal. Lowest bidder for sure was chosen for these shocks. When they leak, they don't just sweat, but pretty much puke out all the oil. As for the tie rods,I would say you got a bad set.
