Its scratched!
« on: March 30, 2007, 05:08:28 pm »
Found a scratch on the top of the trunk lid of the TSX today. >:( :banghead:

Its about 1.5 to 2cm long, and its a dark grey as you can see. There is definitely a bit of an indent from the original paint surface (can't really see from the pics though).

I don't know the first thing about fixing scratches...so I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.

What a ridiculous first two weeks with the car. :(

Everything in life is relative.

You seem to having a run of bad luck with this car.

Search for Scratch X in the Detailing Tips & Tricks section, you'll find plenty of information and steps.

*sigh* Well there is *some* good news at least...stopped by the dealership and they mentioned that the parts for my car are listed as being on the way from the depot to the service dept...so Saturday or Monday they should be in.

They also have some pro detailing people that they contract and they're going to get one of them to try a conservative "compounding" or something on it, and if that doesn't work then they're going to try something called a "wet sand" or whatnot. Anybody know what those techniques actually are?

:(

To remove a scratch, there's no other way but to level the surface of the paint all around it down to the level of the scratch.

Things like scratch-X are "compounding" liquids, and if you apply it correctly, it gently levels the surface around the scratch as you rub it in. My guess is wet sand is when they use a sander. I've seen TSXs sanded well (post-sanding pictures), I believe it's all about the skill.

Maybe ask to see some of the work of these pro-detailing people, and talk to them to better understand the technique they will apply.

Now that bites ...  :( As others said, go to a reputable detailing shop for an opinion.

Sorry to hear about your string of bad luck with your new car.  :o  :(

Definitely consider a pro job if the scratches bother you and a paint stick won't do the job.  Given that this is unknown territory for you by your own admission, I would not recommend a DIY kit on a new car.

If it had been your winter beater then by all means, just not your new pride and joy.  ;)

Regardless of what you decide, good luck!  :)

Visited a place called Fine Details today...its a franchise op. This particular one is under new management.

Offered to do a wet-sand on the scratch and then polish the whole trunk lid for $80...thinking about jumping on it..

I wouldn't do that, you'll probably dent the lid!  :o :-\ :-\

A wet sand is appling water to the area and using a super fine sand paper by hand.

Get a bottle of VIM commonly used kitchens and found at any supermarket.  Apply to wet paper towel and apply.

$80...thinking about jumping on it..

Money to burn  :)

I'm not going to do it myself :P too scared.

I'll probably let the dealer's contractor guy take a look at it first though, since thats free. Hehehe.

Be brave my friend.  This will not be the last nick on your car.

Try the VIM today.  Stores still open.  :)  It is 1000 times safer than a wet sand.

Wash surface off then dry.  Wet paper towel (cheese cloth even better).  Apply VIM to paper towel and rub lightly in circular motion.  Stop.  Examine. Repeat.  You cannot screw it up.

Their high gloss "wax" will only temporarily cover the wet sand up.  When it wears off it will show a slight diff.  They will say too bad and get lost.  Then it will drive you crazy.  :)

Gave both the Scratch-X and the VIM a try, but to no avail. I'm quite certain that the scratch has gone through both the clearcoat and the paint, and is down to the primer.

Dealer should hopefully be able to get their pro-detailing guy to look at it tomorrow. I personally don't see how they are going to be able to do this without applying a little extra paint to fill the gap, and I'm actually really apprehensive about it overall. :(

You would not believe how many, never yet licensed, brand new cars get nicked and are air brushed at the dealer.  The cost from a mobile paint guy is about $50. to the dealer for a scratch like yours.  I use the guy from time to time.  He has a little paint lab in his car.  Either BASF or PPG paint systems.  So if your going to spend $80. then have it air brushed by one of these guys rather than buffed out and have grey tinted wax temporarily put in it's place.

Thanks. I'll inquire about the air-brushing.

Wouldn't it mess up the clearcoat though?

The air brushing is base coat and then clear coat; clear coat being a mix of the base coat colour and the clear.

"Air brushing" is the only method used outside a paint booth.  It's how cars are touched up.  It's not a case of choice.

What about colour matching with the airbrush route?
