Shocks
« on: March 29, 2007, 05:45:17 am »
Hey guys, I need some help here.

My car makes a sqeeking noise in the rear whenever I go over a bump, and if you push down on the back and make it bounce you can here it really bad. Could this be the shocks? or springs?

Thanks in advance.

And it could be neither. The experts (not me) here, will need  mileage, make, model, and year of car.

When you check your shocks for bounce (put all your weight on the bumper and release) how many times does your car rear move up and down? Have you visibly checked the parts in that area? Usually, it would be a bushing making a noise.

Check stabilizer links. Short 5 inch links that have gone bad on my Honda products 5 times now. When they go bad they make creaking and popping sounds when going over bumps even at low speeds.

So far always have been covered by my extended warranties so not sure cost of replacing but I think it is about $150.

I agree with Dash.

Not enough info.  We don't know if it's FWD, RWD, 4WD, car, truck, minivan, domestic, import, leafs vs. coils, struts vs. shocks w or w/o rear stabilizer

Is it just a squeak? or is there a clunk as well?

If squeak and clunk, I would look for worn bushings on the shocks and/or other suspension parts.  Just a squeak, then it may just be dry bushings or something rubbing.  Leaf springs can squeak as they get older or get grit in between the leaves.  But as noted above, more info from you would help us help you better   ;)

Definitely more info required but if the rear of the vehicle keeps bouncing then its more then likely the shocks that have gone bad on you. I just last week replaced my front ones with Munroes on my one Caddi as it was doing the same thing.  :)

Thanks for all replies,

It's a 2002 Civic Si with 123000kms. There's no clunking, just squeaks and creaks as I go slow over bumps.

Replace rear shocks. Fronts struts are probably due as well.

Not the best struts in the 2001/2002 gen.   Much depends on what you cart around in it.  :)

Honda calls the rears, shocks, but they are actually more like a strut.  I dunno about cost.  Maybe 90 bucks for the KYB which is probably whats in it now.

Will it do more damage the longer I leave it or is this something that can wait?

Its something I would have looked at just to be on the safe side. A good garage will diagnos which parts are required and should be able to deal with the problem correctly. Squeeky Bushing are easy to deal with by spraying them with refigeration oil as it soaks into the rubbers again and helps swell them up to quiet them down. This is a trick I have used for many years and it works very well.  :)

I bounced the rear bumper and it goes down once and stops. Does that help? I have'nt visibly checked the area yet. It was 9pm when I tried this and it did'nt make any noise. It was a little damp out, i'm not sure if that was a factor.

:banghead: Nobody is listening to me.  :banghead:
I am telling you it is just the stabilizer links. I had what I think are same noises and it has been the links every time in my Acura 1.6 (a dressed up civic) and my accord. Mine would not make noise when I bounce the car only when I drove. The fact that you car does not bounce convinces me more that it is not the shocks.

Check it out get it fixed and come back and make sure to tell everyone I was right.

But you said this before:

and if you push down on the back and make it bounce you can here it really bad.

You should not be able to push down on the back of this civic and make it bounce if the rear struts are in good shape.

You need to take it in for an inspection.

I had the same problem in my Civic.   They were making noise badly until I got them fixed.   Honda suspension seems to be a product weak point... :(

We hear you.  :)

driver02 says earlier:

Those are opposite observations.  Me thinks a hands on inspection is going to be necessary.  :)

Could be other things, radius arm bushings, control arm bushings, sway bar link kits, etc.

I beleive the other posters may be well correct on the suspension links as it sounds as if your shocks are OK. Enough of the other owners have experienced this problem so they are probably correct in their suggestions.  :)
