Rust protection for a new car
« on: March 21, 2007, 03:19:24 pm »
Hi all,
What is the best rust protection to apply in a new car for lower body panels against salt (here in Ottawa we get a lot of salt on the streets in winter time) and stone Chips that can cause rust and depreciate vehicle value.

I really appreciate any feed back  ???

Rust portection is a waste of money unless your plan is to keep the car for a very long time..

IMO don't do it if your going to keep it 5 years or less.. if you need to do it the ones that get applied yearly like Rust Check seem to work the best

Thanks allen,
I'm thinking keep the car for 10 years (if the car survive).

As this is a Canadian forum, this question is asked (and answered) repeatedly.

If you plan to keep your car that long, take it to Krown every year.  Get it sprayed in the summer so the oil penetrates well.  Put down newspaper or something on the floor of your garage to catch the drips.

Then, use the search function on the forum.

Actually, I would recommend you reverse the order of those two statements but if you follow the advice of most here you will end up at Krown anyway.  ;)

Krown seems to be the number one choice amongst car owners here; certainly it's my choice.  I get it done every June and only wish I had started when the car was brand new and not almost 2 years old.

Trim: I suggest Metropolitan rustproofing since you're in Ottawa.  They're marginally cheaper than Krown and have the same warranty, and I've found they do a fantastic job.  There's a location on Merivale Rd. just south of Hunt Club (near the Esso bulk terminals).

They also have a location in Gatineau as well, if that's closer.

Nothing wrong with them, or Krown, and I've used both on my older 1991 Integra (which I sold to my sister) and it had no major rust problems, which is amazing considering they're known to rust pretty badly, and it lived 4/5ths of its life in salty, near-zero-degree Ottawa.
2004 TSX. Lovin' every minute of it!

Any vehicle that has been Krowned goes up in value at any used carlot automatically because of it. It is heavily recognized by the majority of used dealers in Canada to be the best there is for any new vehicle.  :)

That only applies to certain areas of Canada. In  BC, AB and SK it adds $0 to a car's value.

I have two newish cars an 07 Matrix bought last year and an 07 Fit picked up this week. No dealer rust protection taken for usual reasons. Have been debating getting Krown but I don't like the dirty door look I see on cars driving around that I suspect are Krown (or similarly sprayed) cars. Today I saw a Mazda in th parking lot with a new Krown 2007 sticker on it. It had oil covered in dirt and dust all under the handles, gas cap, rear bumper under the trunk lid and along the bottom of both doors.

My question is how long this running oil/dust collection mechanism lasts? Will it go away after a few car washes or keep running all year?

I appreciate it's a trade off for protection from rust but if it's that unsightly I may be inclined to just get them undersprayed once a year and avoid the in the door thing. Any thoughts?

It seeps from the door handles and crevases for a couple days after spraying, and can seep some more when the temperature goes up.  It ain't surprising that the oil that seeps out will attract dust and dirt.

Wash thy car.  The oil won't seep until the next application once you have a couple of hot days behind you.

In fact being an eatern car would deduct value - krown treated or not.
