Boy I know I'm about to a can of worms with this comment. Their is no reason for any vehicle on the road to not get a minimum of 30MPG and not have a speed governor of 120KM/H. Period. Anything bigger than a 1/4 ton should be diesel only, until the govenment gets a set and implements this then they have no credibility on the "save the environment from motor vehicle" front. It is my firm belief that the Hybrid is not answer to this problem. Afterall how many Class 8 trucks do you see that can go 140KM/H or are gasoline powered?

There is a good reason.   Ferrari would go out of business and then there would be no more F1.
Now if you limit your comment to TRUCKS not VEHICLES then that's a different matter... sure I'll go for that

Trucks are already speed governed, by law, in most juristrictions. Back in July I went to Ontario for a wedding, by keeping my ION at/near the speed limit I found the car got an extra 10 IMPG over the same run last year(Riverview to Les Cedres,PQ), worked out to $50 more beer money on vacation. The highest speed limit in Canada is 120 KP/H and speed kills people and fuel economy, their is no logical reason to not speed limit vehicles to 120.

Worms perhaps for some but I actualy agree with this statement, if we limited the scope to Canada or perhaps NA.  Racing (or any Motor sports) is a different matter alltogether and as for the Ferrari argument my answer is oh well you still can't drive it to its full potential on Highways (legally) anyway so who would really care (maybe the guy who just shelled out $250 Grand) I have never really understood the need nay the obsession to produce cars that produce monstrous horsepower and can go up to 2 or 3 times faster than you will ever be able to go.  Govern em all I say and public perception will adjust itself accordingly.

There's a simple solution.  If you want to drive that way, go right ahead.  Nothing is stopping you.

Just noticed this topic and decided to chime in since I have the honor and the priveledge of owning a hybrid from a company that was chopped by GM.  OP stated, "Federal incentives to encourage a shift from gas-guzzling SUVs to fuel-efficient “green cars” could hurt struggling North American auto makers by keeping some drivers out of the marketplace without significantly boosting sales of gasoline-electric hybrid cars, industry watchers say."

As an owner of a hybrid I can tell you that the amount of gas it guzzles is no different than any other 4 cylinder, 50/55ltr. tank.  Furthermore, the glitches I have experienced... my car has been in the shop more than any other vehicle I have ever owned.  It's a pain in the ass.

Our is at 5 / 100km, over 20,000 km, the only time it been to the dealer is for oil changes

This moaning and whining is pathetic. The big 3 knew about the upcoming eco crisis for decades, and for decades they have been maxing out their profits and the petrol industries' by building bigger, heavier and thirstier monsters like there was no tomorrow. At the same time the asians didnt push the bigger ones not coz they couldnt engeneer them but because they saw it coming and instead invested in high tech. Now it (finally!) turned out to be a prudent investment. If I could only suggest there should be even bigger tax on guzzlers, e.g. an air pollution health tax, especially in big cities.
I hope this tax will go towards development of renewable energy sources and fully electric cars like tesla.

I agree with the first part of the statement that the big 3 knew about the fact that gasoline consumption and costs will put lighter and more economical cars on the top of consumer demand list. But that was not the concern of the company where you have to satisfy the existing demand.

As far as increasing taxes... come on. When did the tax hikes actually have solved anything? Naturally, people will have to abandon high gas consumption vehicles because of the gasoline cost and currency devaluation which drives the standard of living down making powerful vehicles unaffordable for most. As far as pollution, from consumer vehicles, the numbers simply do not add up to make it a serious issue. Yes, I lived in LA, yes I have inhaled smog every morning and yes I know you can get a headache from it. On the global scale however, the amount of car emissions in the atmosphere is so insignificant that it ain't going to make a difference. It's just an excuse to rub consumers blind through taxes.

Well, why not limited the speed to 60 kph? Think of all the gas we would save then. Even better, the slower people go, the less they will want to travel longer distances, so why not drop the govenrned speed limit even lower. 20 kph?

Speed kills? Maybe it is time to reintroduce flag men walking in front of a car as it goes down the road. Think of all the lives we will save!

Logically you are right, however the highway system was designed and built for 100-120 KPH and most vehicle are geared to get their best fuel mileage in the 90-110 range. Going slower would save more lives of course. Speed governing on passenger vehicles and trucks would require, in most cases, nothing more from the manufacturer but to program such into the PCM as their are few vehicles that haven't switched to drive-by-wire. So why not regulate it into the upcoming models?
