I don't see why the government can't come up with a more creative solution than simply slapping Canadians with more taxes... More incentives (rather than tax punishment), force all government, and taxi fleets to be low-emission/hybrid vehicles etc... I am guessing the PM is still riding in the back of stretch...

why can't they think out of the box?

Lame as it is, there is the REBATE part of the program.  That counts as incentives in most people's books.  The other reason why it can't all be incentives is that those cost money.  So would replacing all those fleet vehicles.  That money needs to come from somewhere...

Sadly, human nature being what it is, fees on undesirable behaviour are more effective at curbing that behaviour than incentives on desirable behaviour.

makes a Smart car an easier choice for those on the fence. Asking price of $17k - $2K rebate plus whatever you can knock off for it being a 2006 model, new model coming out, etc -  might not be a bad deal really considering the strong resale values.

If it wasn't for the poor winter driving performance I might consider one as a commuter car.

Not a bad selection on the list there.

The TDIs are disappearing fast enough as it is.

They're still a good selection in dealer stock in ON. I'd give it another month or two here, and VW is advertising the heck out of the last TDIs here considering they're disappearing and dealers shouldn't really have a problem unloading them.

I just hope they carry on with the low interest finances/leases in May.

Sorry if this has been posted, but are these rebates taken off at the time of purchase, or do you have to send in for the rebate with the gov't and wait for a cheque?

You have to deal with the government. Only the 'gas guzzler levy' is paid at the dealership.

So if you finance or lease, then you're paying interest on the full price... kinda crappy.  $4K combined (Federal/Ontario) on some hyrbids, and that cuts into your savings a decent amount over the term.

If you finance, shouldn't be a big issue, its an open loan, you can put down the rebate as soon as you get it.

With the lease, not so.

Good point.

Any idea how long it takes to get the money back from the gov't?  8 weeks?

Frankly, I have no idea, if you do correspond with government on any issue, 6-8 weeks is a normal quoted time.

Scroll up and check the ecoAuto website.

well..... i was going to start a new thread to ask this question however.... since the topic is already being discussed!  I am curious to know what type of gas milaege the X5 4.4 gets... I test drove one the other day and fell in love... the answer to this question may make me fall out of love pretty quick....  maybe the 3.0 is much better?

your thoughts....
