Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage
« on: March 19, 2007, 06:55:26 pm »
From Central Connecticut State University:

:o   :o      Guess my Pathy is not so bad after all  :D

http://clubs.ccsu.edu/recorder/editorial/print_item.asp?NewsID=188

Quotes from the article:

"The Prius costs an average of $3.25 per mile driven over a lifetime of 100,000 miles - the expected lifespan of the Hybrid.

The Hummer, on the other hand, costs a more fiscal $1.95 per mile to put on the road over an expected lifetime of 300,000 miles. "

"Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel. The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles."

Snowie?  Is this still true?  I thought things around Sudbury were getting cleaned up?

"When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis."

"So, if you are really an environmentalist - ditch the Prius. Instead, buy one of the most economical cars available - a Toyota Scion xB. The Scion only costs a paltry $0.48 per mile to put on the road. If you are still obsessed over gas mileage - buy a Chevy Aveo and fix that lead foot."

Expected lifetime should probably be reversed. The oldest Prius in Canada is already at 410,000 km, whereas the Hummer H1 doesn't seem good for much more than (careful) posing around town and (careful) offroading, given the gutless engine, extreme width, and high cost.

On the nickel issue, I've seen it calculated that the all the nickel that Toyota purchases for all its manufacturing amounts to .5% of the Sudbury plants output, so a tiny portion of whatever pollution the plant pumps out.

That's what I've been saying about the Prius for a long time.  The amount of energy required to create those big batteries, transport them and eventually discard them in a proper way requires more energy than the fuel savings.

If you really care about the environment get a low emissions conventional car or a diesel (and if you are a real tree huger you can use bio-fuel, such used cooking oil).

Honestly the Prius and other hybrids is just a way for the car manufacturers to show the governments and tree hungers that they care about the environment.

You must be referring to a top secret hybrid called the priAPus.  Its suspension stiffens only when the ride gets exciting.   :o :o

Read it carefully.  The Prius goes to the landfill at 160,000km and the Hummer at 486,000km.  Bunk.

Most of what the author wrote is just plain opinion. And most of that is quite illogical too.

First of all, energy isn't measured in terms of dollars. It's measured in terms of Joules (physics, anyone?). Dead give-away that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

And who in the world would keep a Hummer for 300K miles?

Lastly, that Sudbury plant in Ontario processes 350,000 tonnes of metal each year. 1,000 tonnes (which is for the Toyota's hybrid engines) is like what, 0.002% of the plant's total product???

How is that gonna affect the environment?

What bull-$h!t.

Moreover, the author fails to realize that even without the Toyota's need to use this plant, this Sudbury plant will continue to produce metal for other things. So his argument about "hurting the environment 'cuz of this plant" is a moot point.   ::)

CVRD/INCO Sudbury operations produces +/- 216 million pounds (98,000 tonnes) of finished nickel.
