Day 1:

2007 Ford Edge SEL AWD
Back to reality and into the Ford Edge this week, Ford's new entry into the crossover segment.  Sales of the Ford Edge have been strong since released just a few months ago and with striking good looks and a well laid out interior I can certainly understand why this vehicle is taking off. More ...

It really does look good, in pictures and in person.  It's a lot easier on the eyes than other semi-sporty six-cylinder crossovers like the Tribeca and Murano.  I'm curious to hear how it drives.

Besides weight, the major complaint car mags seem to have on the Edge is the dashboard reflections in the windshield.

German cars come with a non-reflective dark color dash, the top portion anyway. Used a dash cover on a tan interior before, have to cut down the glare and reflection.

James, I'm interested in your impressions of the guage numerals that "lie down" rather than "stand up".

Apparently this was an issue in pre-production units - which is what those car mags tested. That issue does not exist in production vehicles. I have heard 3 different people mention that and then once they were inside an Edge they all wondered what that mag was talking about.

You noticed a reflection (stop the presses!)? Or you noticed that the reflection was so bad that you couldn't see out the windshield, which is what Car & Driver implied.

In the Dec '06 issue they printed a separate picture of the windshield with the caption: "Consider putting pix of Bettie Page on the dash - whatever's there will be reflected in the driver's sightline." I read somewhere that the dash cover was changed before production to minimize reflection.

I drive different makes of cars and trucks every day and in addition to the comments of people noted in my earlier post, I can't say that the Edge's dash reflection is any worse than many vehicles. Windshield reflection is one of those things, like background noise, that the brain is able to filter out - until it is brought to a person's notice. If people made an effort to notice the reflection in their windshields many would find them more pronounced than they realized.

IMO, it is just a car journalist's mountain out of a molehill.

I really wanted to dislike this vehicle - not sure why, but I just didn't think Ford could get cross-over (Mazda CX7 and CX9 notwithstanding). But, like Miss Elizabeth Bennet - I have grown to appreciate this vehicle in a very short time and find them very attractive, and balancing the world nicely between utility, looks and performance.

Now - if that window reflection is even half as bad as my 02 Altima was, then it would be very annoying. Even though you get used to it somewhat over time, there are few annoyances as distracting - and potentially unsafe - as high reflective glare from the dashboard on the windshield.

Ford needs to get rid of that ugly grill on all their cars.. looks like somebody used some left over aluminum siding.. it really cheapens the look, thank god the Fusion/Edge designers didn't get there hands on the front of the Mustang

After someone I know was able to "lock" their keys in their car (rather than carry them) I suddenly saw great value in what I previously thought was an antiquated entry device.

My '98 Explorer has the keypad feature & I for one use it lots & consider it a desirable feature, equal to the single entry/ignition key. For my usage I can drop the car off for the other driver to use & they need only know the code & hope I've left them the keys in the vehicle.

I think some of the ways Ford applies this feature looks cheap, but others are fine (I like them up next to the window in black integrated more... F-Series?, not stuck on their own on the paint down by the door handle). Would be good when you're camping so you don't have to get your keys or other times (wearing shorts, without your coat, goofin' off wherever). Think it useful.

Yeah, that'd be useful to me as well Shoppy. My partner/friends can get something out of my car without me giving them the keys.

The Edge looks good to me. A little like an overblown jellybean, but fresh. Besides the pana roof, the interior is a nice step up but not blow me away groundbreaking. Solid effort, decent price.

sirAQUAMAN64; Does the Edge impress you enough to consider it for your next vehicle purchase? The dealership in my town just got one in & I'm trying to work up enough nerve to test drive it. I guess I'm afraid I might like it & then I'll be having to talk to the banker. S
