New Volvo S40 to become 3 series fighter

Apparently it's supposed to take on the 3 series et. al and supposed to replace the S60 as well:

That means that Volvo will most probably base the S40 on the Mondeo / S-MAX platform and not on the Focus platform as it did with the current model.

Bringing the Mondeo to North America...third time's a charm?  But if it's going to be a 3-Series fighter, it needs RWD or full-time AWD, not FWD or on-demand AWD.

I like the looks a lot, but I wonder if it's smart for Volvo to just have two sedan sizes (compact and huge) instead of three.

Volvo better ditch their I5 if they ever want to dream being considered a legitimate BMW competitor.

I wish them good luck, Volvo will need it.  I think it make sense to ditch the S60 as it was to close to the S40 mainly in size and also other basic specs.  I supposed this new version would come in AWD.
Which is worst: turbo lag or stomach flu?

Volvo would need a new engine and to totally redfine the way the car feels to move it to a BMW fighter. This from a current v50 owner. Vovo doesn't know how to do SPORTY. they know competent. Their designs are improving but they haven't even come close on steering feel, engine design or suspension feel yet.

The current Saab 9-3 was purported to be the next 3 series fighter.  ::) :P

That is a nice looking S40.

The new Saab 9-3 has got some nice "Aero-X" concept car touches in its design execution. They are mostly carry over design touches from the "Aero-X" concept. If GM puts an engine as agressive as the new 9-3 looks, improves the drive dynamics and switches it to rear-wheel drive then you may have a Bimmer 3 series killer.

So basically they've got to change the ENTIRE car.

Bringing back the original and most popular 9-3 hatch and making it RWD would be excellent.

Add a more rigid body, a responsive turbo, efficient brakes and a lasting information display board and I would agree.  Believe me I know what I'm talking about.
By the way, the 9-3 CombiSport is a pretty cool looking vehicule.
