Ford, Chrysler left behind as small cars rule
GREG KEENAN

Globe and Mail Update

Companies with hot-selling small cars joined BMW Canada Inc. in jumping ahead of the pack in a flat Canadian vehicle market last month.

There was more bad news in Detroit where Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group posted sales declines and lost more ground to market leader General Motors Corp., which had a surprising sales gain.

Nonetheless, GM announced it will cut North American vehicle production by 5 per cent in the second quarter. Ford will slash output by 14 per cent in the same period.

Over all, sales in the U.S. market were also flat from year-earlier levels.

Canadians drove off dealers' lots in 97,248 new cars and trucks, compared with 97,594 in February, 2006.

Small cars did well as gas prices edged up from low levels in January, particularly late in the month in Toronto, where some stations ran out of gas last week.

Sales of the subcompact Versa helped propel Nissan Canada Inc. to the best performance of the month among the major companies with a 31-per-cent sales gain. Nissan sold 1,101 Versa models in February and is averaging sales of about 1,000 of the cars monthly.

The Versa competes with the Yaris from Toyota Canada Inc. That car helped pull Toyota to a record February performance.

It was a similar story at Mazda Canada Inc., where sales of the Mazda3 compact jumped 13 per cent, helping Mazda to its ninth straight monthly record.

BMW posted a 22-per-cent jump.

The big gains among new subcompacts follow the traditional pattern of the Canadian market, which is dominated by subcompacts and compacts and other entry-level vehicles.

For the first time ever, 50.7 per cent of retail purchases last year were more fuel-efficient vehicles, industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers said in an analysis of the market.

“The market is working just fine and consumers are embracing smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles in a very big way,” said Mr. DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. “Why not just let the market continue to work?” he asked in a jab at the federal government, which is proposing to regulate fuel economy as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Many of those driving larger vehicles are doing it because they have no choice, he noted.

“Tell a soccer mom to buy a new Toyota Yaris instead of a new Toyota Sienna minivan and they will tell you to take a hike.”

Hybrid vehicles that combine electric motors with a traditional internal combustion engine are getting a lot of hype, but that is overblown, added Richard Cooper, executive director of the Canadian operations of consulting firm J.D. Power and Associates.

“When it comes down to it, we buy small, fuel-efficient vehicles anyway,” Mr. Cooper pointed out.

Companies that don't have a new subcompact didn't fare as well last month. Sales for Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd., which has no subcompact at all, slumped 11 per cent last month.

“Ford, I think, is really suffering from the lack of a small, fuel-efficient vehicle, especially in this market,” Mr. Cooper said.

GM, whose Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac Wave subcompacts, are among the older cars in the segment, posted a 7-per-cent sales decline.

DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc., which, like Ford, doesn't have a subcompact, managed to hold its position with flat sales.

Who the heck buys all these small cars?  I don't see many around Windsor and I don't personally know anybody that drives one.  Most people that I know drive mid to large cars, trucks and suv's.  My PT Cruiser is about the smallest car in the bunch. ???

Mazda is part of Ford.  Is Ford "left behind"?  I don't think so.

Me.   A BMW 3 series  and now a FIT as well.  (  I am 6' and >240lbs)
1) personal preference  I learnt to drive in a Mini  ;D
2) there are very few acceptable mid to large cars that I am prepared to/ am able to pay for. Most mid to large cars do not offer a proper gearbox ( in NA).
3)  Truck or SUV. Most of the trucks and SUVS that I see around look like 1950's technology of body on frame with HUGE engines.  I dont need to tow anything at this time. I dont feel a need to sit 6' above the road, I dont need to carry work stuff and I certainly see no point in pouring gas into a V8 engined thing with a drag coefficient like a barn door.  Yes I know there are some modern unit body SUVs but they are either expensive ( M-B, Porsche or BMW) and/or still dont offer a proper gearbox.

My extremely biassed 2c

However. I had the experience of driving a Honda Odyssey for a week in January... which is a very big vehicle... and that was ok.  Possible the biggest vehicle I have driven in the last 20 years.

I doubt I will ever buy a larger vehicle than a compact hatch/wagon/tall wagon. No desire whatsoever.

I'm with tpl. I owned 2 Austin Minis, the Forester was the second largest car I ever owned (in 40+ years of car ownership), and I currently have a Yaris. I highly value agility (over brute force), rarely want or need more room than I have, and value being RELATIVELY green.

In the last six months, I've gone from a two door, no weight 1992 Mazda 323 to the relatively hefty four door 'station wagon' 2003 Matrix.

Do I want to downsize for a more responsive, fleet of foot small car?

Damn right, I do!   ;D
Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??

:iagree:

This article sometimes uses the phrase "compact" to refer to compacts, but sometimes uses it to refer to subcompacts.  They're not being very consistent with their definitions.  For example, they mention sales spikes for Mazda and BMW, which offer compacts but not subcompacts.

Either I am getting really old or all you guys are very young.  I have driven many different cars in my 49 years of driving, from VW bugs to Full Size Dodge Vans.  I even had a Corvette for awhile and a series of Dodge Dart 340's (those were fun).  These days, I want a car with some room in it, a decent ride and a little performance.  I made a mistake when I got the PT Cruiser, I thought I could live with a small car.  It has been a great car with no problems in 4 years, but I want something bigger.  I will be taking delivery of a new Charger in  the next 2 weeks and I think it will be a perfect fit for me.  I guess I am in the minority these days. :'(

I’m 46, 6’-4” tall, and 230 lbs. I drive a WRX Wagon and would say I that I am approaching the ergonomic limit of the car. But I am not uncomfortable and have lots of room for stuff and family.  :) and can kick some a$$ as well.

Paul - you and I must be similar in age, I've had a licence for 46 years and driving longer than that.. ;)

I understand totally your comments on size and, for the most part, agree; particularily if the vehicle is your daily driver as my Highlander is.

Congrats on the new Charger coming to your driveway soon, and be sure to post a pix for us so we can share your "happiness is a new car".

Since I got my license in 1963, I don't consider myself "very young", nor am I very small (6', 190 lbs). I find the Yaris to be a very suitable size, and it is a fun drive given my usage pattern. Please accept that different people have different biases. I have driven a number of larger vehicles (including 2 summers driving a full-sized dump truck), but have ALWAYS preferred small ones.

I have always favoured a larger vehicle for "family use".  Back when my 4 kids were at home, we always had a large car, even a couple of station wagons and then I switched to full-size vans in the late 70's and early 80's.  There were a few mini-vans after that, a great family vehicle.  Of course "dad" always had a toy for driving by himslf, that is where the Vette and assorted muscle cars came in.  Now that is just me and the wife with the grand-kids once in a while, I think the Charger is the perfect size for us.  I could never bring myself to drive one of those little econoboxes. :)
Btw, I am 65, so I guess I am getting old. :o

If I had  or had had 4 kids I bet I'd be in favour of bigger vehicles as well.

Checking 2006 sales one can notice that Ford Car sales rose 5,9% compared to 2005. More and more they are paying more attention to the car category, products like the Fusion, the Fiesta coming on and the hope that they bring more Euro cars to America are the main signs that things in Dearborn are changing focus.
