Having driven the Targa 4S only a few weeks ago, I had the rare opportunity to come to my own conclusions on the new Cayman platform in comparison to Porsche’s historic 911 architecture this weekend as I spent almost all of it inside the new Cayman.More ...

True to its form, these vehicles can only be appreciated while driving. Paper analysis is useless, as James' review. Porsche has its dedicated following for a reason, only in the know, get it why.

I don't know ... I wish Porsche would have made the Cayman more unique.  I'm sure it's a great car and that it drives like a Porsche should but it was built to be "average".  The Boxster was built to be the best roadster Porsche could produce ... not as a more affordable 911 convertible.  Anyway, I'm sure the car is great ... I'm just rambling.  ;D

This isn't a cheaper 911.  This is mid-engined; the 911 is rear-engined.  So a Cayman will run circles around a 911 handling-wise.

The Cayman is a great handling car with the engine in the right place, but it won't run circles around the 911.  I don't know if there's anything average about it.....because I'd love one....and I'm an average person....but still can't afford one.

I meant average as intermediate ... (Boxster+911)/2=Cayman.:think:  It's like it was handicapped so that it wouldn't be a threat to the 911 (e.g. There's no real limited-slip differential).

The 911 doesn't have a limited slip either as far as I know ;) 

Mdx it is not as raw as the S2k, but the driving dynamics are very similar.  Having not driven my car in a few months it's hard to say but they are very close.

Porsche Canada - Cayman Base price - $69,600.
Porsche USA - Cayman Base price - $49,400.

Owned two Miatas and would absolutely take the Cayman over the Boxster.

Better looking (subjective of course)
Stiffer for sure
Should be lighter (someone pls check the specs)
Should be more cargo room (is still important for touring)
Most importantly - more flexible for track days (many tracks still give you a great deal of grief with 'verts and helmet top vs rollbar height.  Tin top is the only way to get on the track for sure.
Oh, less sunburn on your head ;)
