US recalls:
06 Nissan Altima and Sentra
Could consume excessive quantities of motor oil because of faulty piston rings. If oil level isn't maintained, fire or engine damage could result.
Models: 85,000 cars with 2.5-liter engines.
What to do: As of July 3, Nissan hadn't devised a repair solution. However, the company has contacted owners, instructing them to check and maintain proper oil level. For information, call 800-647-7261.
'03 Nissan Altima and Sentra
Engine could stop without warning while vehicle is driven at slow speed, possibly causing crash.
Models: 200,866 cars with 2.5-liter engines. Hazard exists because of the location of a sensor in the engine compartment. Under certain driving conditions, temperature fluctuations could cause a brief interruption in the signal from the sensor, possibly leading to engine stoppage.
What to do: Have dealer reprogram electronic control module (ECM). For information call Nissan at 800-647-7261.
'02-03 Nissan Altima
Problem: In extreme cold, engine could suddenly stall, resulting in possible crash.
Models: 377,000 cars made 8/01 to 5/03 and sold or registered in Alaska, Colo., Conn., Idaho, Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kan., Maine, Mass., Mich., Minn., Mo., Mont., N.D., Neb., N.H., N.Y., Ohio, Pa., R.I., S.D., Utah., Vt., Wisc., and Wyo. Hazard exists because moisture in fuel tank could freeze and form ice crystals. The crystals could obstruct the suction opening of fuel pump, blocking the flow of fuel to engine.
What to do: Have dealer install screen at suction opening of fuel pump to prevent ice crystals from blocking opening.
’02 Nissan Altima and Xterra
Problem: Airbag may not deploy in crash.
Models: 64,562 vehicles, including Altimas made from 6/01 to 10/01 and Xterras made from 6/01 to 11/01.
What to do: Have dealer install retaining clip on clock spring electrical connector in steering wheel.
