Tire & Rim Sizes
« on: February 23, 2007, 10:54:56 am »
I drive a 2002 Honda Accord LX and have the oppurtunity to purchase a set of 15"  stock Civic alloy rims that are spotless and unused for $400. They had 190 60 R15 tires on them. I have Fuzion HR1's that are 195 65 R15 on steel wheels with covers on the car now. Would these tires fit the Civic alloy rims? If it fits I plan on installing my winter tires on the steel wheels. Asking price is $400 for the alloys.....good deal?
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

I don't think the civic wheels will fit the car.  The accord went to a 4x114.3 bolt pattern in 1990 but the civic stayed at 4x100.

Unfortunately Titanium48 is correct. The 2002 Honda Accord LX is 4x114.3 bolt circle and the Civic is 4x100.

Thanks guys!
The Honda dealership and you guys confirmed my suspicions. I guess the search is still on. Anyone know whats the largest tire/rim size I could run on the Accord? Guy at crappy tire told me up to 17" rims but tires would be the low profile type.(Is that the correct term for low sidewalls showing?) Also any benefit to getting a larger tire? Or is sticking to a 15" rim and tire the only way to go? If so for a 15" rim and tire what size would be recommended? Thanks to you all for your help and considerations.

Glad to help.

Yes, low profile is the correct term.  There are lots options and lots of trade-offs for each.

Generally speaking:

Low profile will give better handling but at the expense of a harsher ride.  And 17" tires will be more expensive than 15 or 16".

A good compromise would, I think, be a 16" wheel/tire combo.  It will be a bit lower profile than the stock one but not as harsh as a 17".  I will leave it to the tire experts to tell you what size you need to keep the same tire diameter (and hence no speedo issues   ;) ).

There's a great visual tire size calculator at miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html  You put your original equipment tire size in one box and the tire size that you want to change to in another box and it displays the relative differences both in cross section and overall diameter.  It also calculates speedometer error and other useful stuff.

You could run 17in or even 18in wheels but I'll second the 16in wheel suggestion if you want to plus size.  205/55R16 matches the OD of 195/65R15 and is a fairly common size.  Huge wheels with sub-50 profile tires have diminishing returns in the handling department but are heavy and have a high moment of inertia which will hurt accelleration and braking performance.  They also do not appreciate potholes.

All are different! There are those that are conservative and those that are outrageous. You probably reside somewhere in the middle. Do what you are comfortable with and what produces the results you crave.
