Clear coat
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:13:32 am »
Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum (and to cars for that matter) and I hope I can get some help here. I'm doing a touch-up paint job on my Venture and so far so good - I got the matching touch-up paint (silver metallic) from the dealer and applied it (after carefully cleaning the dime sized chip). Now I understand it would be very good to put clear coat on top of it but GM dealer said they have no such thing as clear coat touch-up ?! So I went to a small automotive paint store and the guy sold me some spray that I'm supposed to use for clear-coating the chip. The thing that bothers me is that it says "Super Enamel" on the spray can (and also says "Clear Acrylic") but I can't see "Clear coat" anywhere ? Is "Clear enamel" equivalent to "Clear coat" or I was sold the wrong product ? The spray is Plasti-Kote's Super Enamel (Clear). www dot plasti-kote dot com/plastikote/auto/template.jsp?searchcode=AMP&product=superenamel&t=1 (substitute "dot" for "." cause the anti-spam feature won't allow me to post proper HTML links until I have 10 posts).

Thanks in advance  :)

Enamel means a hard, glossy finish surface. If the spray paint is for Automotive application, it should say so on the description, otherwise I wouldn't use it.

Tape and cover up the surrounding surfaces good, don't start and end at the spot where you want to paint, rather during the 'run'. Take a few practice sprays first.

Some info if anyone needs auto clear coat - at Canadian Tire there are small containers of touch-up paint called Duplicolor 2in1 Scratch Fix and there's one that is in fact clear coat. There's also a Motomaster clear coat spray.

Isnt there a countereaction when you apply a clear coat over the original clear coat? A buddy of mine, his clear coat started to clear coat because he didn't use a countereactant.
