Pennzoil Platinum full Synthetic
« on: February 07, 2007, 10:42:21 am »
I have been using Mobil 1 but find it $$$$ pricey $$$$. Have stayed away from Castrol synthetics due to bad comment about products on this site.

Crappy Tire has Pennzoil Platinum on sale starting Saturday 10 Feb for $24 for 4.7 liters (30% off).

Any reasons for me not to use this product and save myself few buck-a-roos?????

I believe it tested Mid_Pack in a recent posting on this site about SYNTH TESTING.
   Definitely better than DINO JUICE.

I took advantage of a $29 Canadian Tired special  of Labour,Filter and up to 5 Litres of Quaker State's new synthetic and my Millenia with it's 6 year old battery has started daily in this Ontario DEEP FREEZE...so I don't see a problem with that Bargoon price for a decent SYNTH.

The TOP finishers in the test FYI were AMSOIL & MOBIL 1........how much the subtle differences make in real life to an engine..I don't know and I've used both Amsoil & Mobil 1...maybe it is Hype in choosing amongst REAL SYNTHETICS  BUT for SURE they are better than DINO (traditional OILS) especially in start up wear..in WINTER and for heavy load and extra HOT situations.....

Pennzoil and Quaker State are both brands owned by Royal Dutch Shell.

http://pennzoil-quakerstate.com/

I use the full synthetic 5w20 Quaker State on the Acura. I've used it since basically new. On occassion I use the full synthetic Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic on the Infiniti. I don't have any complaints.

Pennzoil Platinum is very good oil.

A member of another forum I belong to ran Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 9,000 miles in his car.
There was still life (TBN) left in the oil and no excess wear on the motor as a result of the extended oil change interval.

You may notice that your motor will sound quieter with Pennzoil Platinum than Mobil 1 (common complaint about M1 is noisier valvetrain).

Mobil is no longer your refuge. They have dumbed down their synthetic line similar to what Castrol did. Now you are stuck with German Castrol, the mighty XD-3 (for how long?) or other boutiques.

What exactly do you mean by "dumbed down"?

Mobil1 isn't exactly a university student on a bender...

I'm interested 'cause I've been using Mobile1...

While ExxonMobil will not publically admit it, they have moved Mobil 1 from a PAO based (Group IV base oil) to hydrocracked Group III base oils.

Castrol has been using hydrocracked Group III base oils for Syntec for years (Mobil took them to court over calling it a true synthetic in the late 90s and lost).

Pennzoil Platinum also uses hydrocracked Group III base oils, but you don't pay the premium price for it that you do for Mobil 1 or Syntec.

Well put. I guess Mobil went the "If you can't beat them you might as well join them." For the record I am a German Castrol or Esso XD-3 guy. For dirtbikes or my vintage Volvo I like Rotella 15W-40 HDEO .

I do not do my own oil changes. I buy the oil and bring it to my mechanic. The reason I do this is because he stocks Castrol and I heard so many negative things about this stuff I wanted to use better oil. Thus I have been buying Mobil 1.

If all the oils have now been "Dumbed Down" to the same level as Castrol I might as well just save myself the trouble and let him put in the Castrol he stocks.

If nothing is to be gained I will not bother bringing my own oil.

Correct????????

As long as the oil is rated for your car and you change , you are good with any kind
I used Castro Red, made in Germany, was on sale at PS for $6.22/l
I have go and pick up the two cases I have on back order

We can start one:

I know that Esso XD-3 0W-30 and 0W-40 are PAO's
Castrol 0W-30 "German Castrol" is a PAO
Mobil 0W-40 is still PAO (?)

A lot of the churn regarding Mobil 1 over on BITOG comes from the M1 no longer being a true synthetic, yet you still pay the true synthetic price for it.

Mobil 1 is still good oil, but why pay a premium price when you can get a "synthetic" oil that is just as good for less money?

No question, some of Mobil's stuff is still true synthetic, but the common ones (5w30 and 10w30) appear to have a Group III component in them.

Heck, even one blend of Amsoil has Group III base oils, but Amsoil openly admits it.

In the grand scheme of things, any API SM/ILSAC GF-4 formulated oils will do just fine in everyday use.

I was thinking about going with the Pennz Platinun thats on sale next week, but since it is a GrpIII and my current oil, esso XD-3 is a PAO, I'm sticking with the Esso for only a few bucks more.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Platinum on BITOG (bobistheoilguy.com) but even more good things about XD-3 from the Canadian members.

As long as your vehicles can utilize the 0W-30 or 0W-40 weights of XD3 then this is a great way to go. How much do you pay for your XD3? I picked up 24 1L bottles for just under $100. This works out to about $4/L which is a steal for a full PAO.
