Canadian Tire brake pads/rotors?
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:41:08 pm »
Does anyone here ever buy their brake pads and rotors from Canadian Tire? How is the quality? I went to CT to get some prices. For my BMW they said I can either get the regular brake pads for $45/set or the performance ones for $65/set. I forgot to ask them what the brand name of the pads is, or do they order OEM? Because they said they would have to be put on order.

My other option is buying good brand names on ebay which is a bit more expensive due to shipping charges.

Just fyi.  BMW dealers do a permanent special on brakes, pads and rotors.  The real thing at extremely competitive prices...I have read on BMW forums that they supply the parts below cost.

Another alternative would be Bavarian Autosport.

www.bavauto.com.

I would not put CT parts on my bmw....although I would put CT parts on a domestic car as I would be confident that the parts were identical to oem

Heck, I wouldn't put CT parts on my Mazda.

Tires and brakes are the two areas where you don't want to buy cheap parts.

I disagree.  I've had CT brakes/rotors on several cars.  It's not like they work on day then just fail the next.  Are they the equivalent of a Brembo OEM?  No.  But they work just fine for everyday driving.

In addition, many suppliers sell their rotors to places like CT and the stealership....so it's even possible the rotors and pads come from the same line as the OEMs...

Most likely put on order as they are not a common part, hence they don't keep in stock.

Nice! Thanks I will probably order from them. They have PBR pads, most everyone on bimmerforums.com swears by them.

Thats agreat link AirB.   I have been without a garage for so long that I had forgotten that I could actually buy parts and use the wrenches that I have owned for 30 years!  I have a garage now  :)

FWIW go to Partsorce rather than CT for auto parts. Partsource is owned by CT and carries all the CT lines. PS price matches CT plus 10% off and the people behind the counter actually have some knowledge of the products they are selling. I recently installed Wagner thermo quiet discs and pads on my Dakota and am very happy so far. I also flushed the entire system with Dot4 fluid and the brake feel/performance is much improved.

Completely off topic: I learned something about brakes. Even though the pads had lots of thickness left the inside surface of the discs were severely pitted. Brake pad thickness is not the only indicator of existing brake life.

I have monroe pads and discs on all 4 wheels from CT. I also have the monroe struts in the rear.  The pads have a lifetime warranty so they cant be that bad.
OF Course these are not brembo quality by anymeans lol
Two things i can complain about is that they overcharged me for the 2 struts
about 490$
and one of the struts (left back) was leaking? so it made noises when going over a bump
ohhh
also, the left back disc warped in the second day i think lol. But that was due to the sticky parking break that doesnt release.
CT fixed the strut and disc free of charge.

It sounds like your rear brake cable is binding which is causing these problems on the rear brakes. A good service and lube job sounds to be in order to correct this problem. I am sure you will notice the difference after a good service is done on the cable.  :)
