1998 Honda CRV winter tires
« on: February 06, 2007, 04:36:52 pm »
My 1998 Honda CRV uses the standard 205/70/r15 tire size.

I have a set of Toyo winter tires in good condition I would like to use. However the Toyo tires are 205/75/r15. Can these tires be used even though the size is slightly different?

How does this affect the speedometer/odometer if they are usable?

This is not a significant change in tire size (mostly height of tire).

People change 16 inch to 15 inch tires regularly(summer to winter).

Since the Toyo tires have a larger aspect ratio, they will have a larger circumference. This in turn means that you will be going faster/farther than the speedometer/odometer indicate. I'm too lazy right now to look up the exact amount of difference, but it should not be too terribly significant.

BTW, switching between 15-16" tires is irrelevant since they will typically have different aspect ratios and/or widths to compensate.

It is recommended that you use the proper size on the vehicle. It is a 4wd vehicle, so it is important to have proper size tires. I would recommend consulting with your Honda dealer before installing larger overall diameter tires.

I've heard up to a 3% difference in spedometer readings is the acceptable range (and assuming the new tire doesn't rub against anything when fully turned), but Morty is the expert.

3% is the acceptable range, but check with your dealer to be sure you wont be causing any additional hardship on your drive line.
