Don't worry, by the time the Toyota committees have finished with it, there won't be any fun left to be had. But it will be reliable. ;D

The new Euro-market Subaru Justy is a re-badged Daihatsu Boon/Toyota Passo (sold in Europe by Daihatsu as the Daihatsu Sirion).  Previous Justys (except for the first generation and its facelift) for the European market were based on the Suzuki Swift.  Toyota is the majority shareholder of Daihatsu.

Subaru Canada: All-new 2008 Impreza hits new sales high

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) today announced
total Canadian sales of 1,575 units in September, up 21.9 per cent compared to
September of last year. For the second month in a row, Subaru's success was
impelled by explosive sales of the all-new 2008 Subaru Impreza.
Subaru dealers sold a record 876 new Imprezas in September, an increase
of 94.9 per cent over the same month last year, and 9.8 per cent improvement
over the monthly Impreza sales record of 799 units set just one month ago.
"Customers have been waiting for the sporty new Impreza, and have
responded with enthusiasm to the sleek new design and the outstanding
combination of sporty performance and great value," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama,
president and CEO of SCI. "With this completely redesigned, next-generation
model, Impreza is finally achieving the driver recognition it deserves."
The 2008 Impreza 2.5i, 2.5i Sport Package and turbo-charged WRX, which
went on sale in July, offer an all-new design, a more spacious interior and
enhanced handling, performance and safety. All are offered in both sedan and
5-door body styles, with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission with SPORTSHIFT(TM). Pricing for the very
well-equipped new Impreza starts at just $20,695 for the 170 hp Impreza 2.5i
sedan with manual transmission.

Subaru Canada, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries
Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, the company markets and
distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of over
90 authorized dealers across Canada.

Reading that, you'd never know that the new Impreza is a step backward in sportiness that has more mainstream appeal but has alienated many enthusiasts.  Hooray for spin  ::)

That's so very true.

But do keep in mind that it's more "value-laden" now than ever before, and the price point is also very competitive with other compact cars.

Mitlov, you're bang-on there.  I find it sad that they had to make the Impreza more bland, less exciting to drive, de-contented and (unbelievably) more homely in order for it to break records.  What a shame.

Makes one wonder how well Subie would've done all these years if their relative pricing was closer to where it is in the States.  Maybe as many Imprezas sold as Mazda3s?  ;)   One can only wonder...

I bet there are a lot of non-enthusiasts out there so the sportiness of car is not as noticeable to them nor do they care. With the new more friendly look of the car it attracting a lot of people that wanted a Subaru but thought they were too ugly in the past.

One part of me is glad that it is working out better for Subaru but the other side of me is sad that their cars will slowly start looking like Toyotas.

I'll bet there are, and that's why the new Impreza is selling better.  But to claim that it's selling better because it's finally cornered the enthusiast market, which is what the Subaru rep said in that article, is a big fat lie.

Sleek new design ?!... What's sleek about the new Impreza's design? I think the fact that they lowered the price (much better value than before) should get the credit for the sales increase.

I find it hard to imagine that people ever have (including the current designs) bought a Subi based on any sleekness!!

I really hope that isn't what it will look like.

Toyota is no.1...Why?  Most people are not big car enthusiasts and don't spend time on car forums.  A lot of people like bland looking cars...That's what Subaru just gave them and it's selling.  It's a corolla with AWD..dull car but will sell well...
