You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
First Drive:
2008 Ford Super Duty pickup

2008 Ford Super Duty pickupTowing a 20,000-lb fifth wheel trailer with the new Ford F-450 Super Duty pickup equipped with the new 6.4-litre V8 Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine "felt like I wasn't pulling much of anything," reports Michael Clark.  The new Super Duty is also available with 5.4-litre V8 and 6.8-litre V10 gasoline engines, but the diesel is the one to have for towing, says Clark. The diesel is rated at 350 horsepower, with 650 foot-pounds of peak torque occurring at a lowly 2000 rpm.

A six-speed manual?  Sweet!  It seems like so many big trucks these days only have automatics.

The interior is awesome, by the way.

That said, I would have no use whatsoever for a truck like this.  If only Ford could bring one of these clean turbodiesels to the F-150 and the like...

I could change the earth's rotation with that much torque.

In that case, I'd really appreciate a 30-hour day, if you don't mind.

Even I have to admit,,, That is a TRUCK.   I am sort of surprised by leaf springs at the rear rather than something more sophisticated... but whatever works.

I personally think the front end headlight treatment looks alien-like, but Ford has done a great job updating the formula for these trucks. And they certainly look unstopable.

 Bow Drool

My brother-in-law is considering (at my suggestion) replacing his '01 Dodge Ram 4x4 with a Ford SuperDuty 'cause it's such a damn fine truck.  He pulls a stock trailer from time to time, and appreciates the capabilities of a 'real' truck.

These trucks really are impressive to behold and absolutely amazing to drive: you feel nothing less than unstoppable.  That said, for the majority of applications, they're far more than anyone needs.  Great for the two weeks each summer you take the trailer up to the lake, but driving it the other 50 weeks of the year?  No, thanks.

Nice trucks for sure. I'd be wary of the new diesel though until it is proven. Ford is suing Navistar over the 6.0 and its troublesome hydraulic injector system. Thankfully this one has gone to electric.

Just a thought re that other 50 weeks note above.   A diesel should be easy to set up to turn off cylinders,  let the computer just turn off the injectors and (ideally) use a vanos/vtec type system to leave the inlet valves open on those cylinders.  Maybe its not so easy with the emissions now tho'  but for sure 4 cylinders worth of that engine should propel the unladen truck nicley as a commuter car/grocery getter Grin

Driving a maual transmission diesel with a torque peak at 2000 rpm is really not that thrilling.  Smiley

How long will it take ford to start buying back the 6.4L "POWERCRAP". The 6.0L "POWERCRAP" was and is just awful and ford went back to Navistar again, just unbelievable. Power and torque just now has caught up to last years Duramax.

As the French would say: to each his own.  Undecided

I'd use the extra time for daydreaming. We don't do enough of that.

They've been driving around N. Alberta for months already doing testing. You probably saw one of those.

I'm not convinced about the boxed-in frame.  Winchs or bumpers requiring bolt holes aren't going to be easly installed (you don't weld frames). Same with mounting any commercial box. The frame is not flat and hopefully predrilled/tapped mounting holes have been thought out at the factory.  The manual transmisions on the former models were tough BUT the lever was only connected to the stub with two screws. These had a tendancy to come loose and the lever came off in the drivers hand.
