Porsche emblem worth 28 000$

Wa-wa-wee-wa !!!

Porsche profits 28 000$ per car

A new study found that German sports car maker Porsche earns an incredible average of $28 000 in profit on every vehicle it sells.  The figure (printed in Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper, citing a study by B&D Forecast) dwarfs the per-car earning of virtually any other automaker.

- BMW:  $3 200 per car
- Audi:  $1 580 per car
- DCX:  $900 per car
- VW: $400 per car

Seems ridiculously high to me. I wonder if there's more to that number than meets the eye?

What else does Porsche AG do? I know they make a bunch of money off of licensing deals - Porsche Design sunglasses, sneakers, toothbrushes...  ;). Are profits from that division counted in the above calculation?

Maybe they're sitting on a whack of cash that they had invested in the market last year. Maybe they've got a financing arm that's a real money spinner.

If you take the bottom line profit of the company, even from divisions that had nothing to do with building cars, then divide that by the number of cars built, you'll get a screwy number for net profit per car.

I agree - I can't see any feasible way any automaker in the world can earn $28 000 per car on their automobile production alone.  I'll wager that figure was reached with some rather less-than-fair numbers used...

People who can afford new Porsches tend not to care about + or - 28k, on a Porsche thats what like the price of the optional red paint calipers :rofl2:

Surely the stats are skewed by the likes of the Carerra GT or even a bunch of the tarted up Cayennes.  When you consider the cost of options on Porsches, it's no surprise that there'd be a lot of profit for the company.  I do agree with the Demo and SirCivic, that there's got to be more to this than the basic look.

The profit on a 'basic' Boxster can't be any more than what?  $15k?  ;)

As long as they're making a profit, they're doing something right.

I wonder what the profit breakdown is for the car itself and the 25k-50k in options you can add.

Surely the stats are skewed by the likes of the Carerra GT or even a bunch of the tarted up Cayennes.

I came to the same conclusion.  The very very high-end models must be tipping the balance.  They made over 1000 Carrera GT (a little less than the 1500 planned) and the delivery charge could go up to 15 000 USD.  Also, you have to consider the 911 Twin Turbo, the GT2, the GT3 and loaded models like the Cayenne ... the Boxsters are starting to feel a little light in the balance.  :P

Other possible explanations:

- You have to pay a certain price for the name and the "heritage" ... it's not a Ferrari but still.
- Those numbers come from Germany.  The cars could be cheaper to deliver over there so more $$$.
- People are just willing to pay that price ... a few years ago the Americans were making 15 000-20 000$ profit on big luxurious SUVs.

We the possible buyers do care a lot as it makes it a little too far too reach for some folks because of the high price.  :) ;D

There's no 'woe is me' involved - NOT everyone is convulsed with envy every time an over-priced German sports car goes by. If you guys wanna pay almost 30 grand too much for a set of wheels, go ahead. And isn't the point of buying one of these things to attract as much attention to yourselves as possible? Don't whine when you get some.

You obviously don't crave a Porsche for the same reasons we do.  It is all about how it drives....the purist on this board could care less about the attention.

There are people who buy a Porsche for the badge, but there's also a whole bunch of people who have sampled a Porsche that will understand the feeling and the driving pleasure that a Porsche delivers.  Not much else compares.  But you have to experience it before you can speak to it.
