Used Vehicle Review:
Jeep Liberty, 2002-2006

2002 Jeep Liberty LimitedWhile it's not the most refined SUV for on-road driving, and not the most fuel-efficient in its class, the Jeep Liberty is one of few compact SUVs with the off-road credentials to back up its rugged looks, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase. Apart from a stalling problem with diesel models and a couple of different recalls related to lower ball joints in the front suspension that wear quickly, the Liberty has been pretty reliable, he says.

A slightly used CRD could make an interesting purchase. Can't speak as to whether it was an underacheiver as Chris states, but it's too bad that it got the boot after strictler emmissions laws. A CRD would be hard to find though I think.

CRDs were really expensive when new limiting their sales.

I tried to look for a 4cyl / 5spd - rwd combo in the junkyards but all seemed to be V6 auto. Shame as it would allow a SRT4 motor to be converted to rwd

Was 2wd even offered in Canada?

I looked at one when I was shopping for an off-road capable truck for my business (ended up with the Pathfinder).  It was 4 cyl, base, only 15,000 km.  Had no A/C and the Jeep dealer whose lot it was on said they could not retrofit the factory unit, would have to be one of those under the dash add-on jobbies, for almost $3,000.  So it was a no-go but came close.

And the CRD was not out at the time.
