Chrysler Group is teaming up with Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co. to design and build small cars in China.
The agreement is described as the first of its kind between U.S. and Chinese vehicle makers.
The two companies will design the cars, which will carry a Chrysler Group name, such as Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep. Chery will build the vehicles for sale worldwide.
The subcompact cars, dubbed "B-cars" in the auto industry, have become very popular in the face of rising prices for gasoline. Competing cars already in the segment include the Honda Fit, the Toyota Yaris and the Chevy Aveo.
The agreement will be presented to Chrysler's advisory board for approval in January. The Chinese government must also give its consent.
Chrysler said it cannot profitably build the small cars in the United States, blaming high costs for labour, among other things.
"We can't build one here in that segment," said Chrysler spokesperson Jason Vines. "You can't make any money on it. That's why we need a partner."
Vines said a prototype design will be unveiled soon. Production is not slated to begin until after 2007, he said.
