Best way to make tires shine without making tires brown??
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:47:54 pm »
Any ideas on what works well to keep tires shinny but without the browning effect that Amour All or other tire dressings have?

I remember that this old style drive thru car wash where you get out and they let your car go through on it's own and then they towel dry it when it's done...well they used this squirty oil car full of something and then wiped around the tire...that stuf was great but I have no idea what it would be...any ideas???

Tips, tricks??

Cheers,

The tire dressings you apply with those applicator sponge-thingies that come in some of the packs tend to work well.  The last one I got was Turtle Wax Emerald Series and it works pretty well.  I'd buy it again.  No brown tires.

Of the ones I've tried, the No Touch spray on stuff is the easiest to apply.  Tried some of the Turtle Wax stuff awhile back and that stuff seemed to leave a bit of residue on the rims - not sure if they've changed the formula lately.

The best in my experience seems to be the Meguiars gel - it's not as easy to put on as the No Touch and probably the most expensive, but it lasts a good couple weeks, and as a benefit stays shiny even after rain (it does eventually wear off if you get a lot of water on them though)

"303 Aerospace Protectant" (available at Canadian Tire, etc...) is really nice for tires, dash, trim, etc.  It's more of a matte finish but has good UV blocking properties which definitely help prevent tires from turning brown.

I personally use that every time I fully wash/wax/detail my car (about once every 6 weeks in summer), and am working on the last bit of Simoniz Midnight Black tire gel that I have left, using that every other week or so in-between the 303 application.  The gel gives a really good wet look, lasts about 10-14 days, and I still retain the UV blocking of the 303.

I use Eagle One 'Wet'. I spray it on a sponge and then wipe it on. Works well for me.

Geez, I've always found that No Touch stuff to be pretty crappy.  I've got a couple of cans that were given to me and I use it the Civic, since it gets so rarely washed anyway.

303 Aerospace is good -- though I've only ever used it on the vinyl top, not the tires.

Thanks All! I can't wait till there is a warm enough day for me to start "dressing" my tires

You could do each tire with a different product and then report back to us with the results!

Meguiars Endurance is my favorite.  It takes a little longer to apply vs. the spray on junk...but it lasts a whole lot longer...even after a couple washes (and it smells like grape!).

I find the spray on stuff sprays OFF when you give'er...and washing that mess off the doors is never fun.

I'd go with Meguiars.  I would also recommend using a soft plastic brush to scrub off any excess gel when you wash the car to ensure there is no browning.

I swear by Meguiar's Endurance as well.  There is zero product waste as the applicator gets the stuff on the tire and nowhere else.  It doesn't give that super-wet look that some of the spray-on stuff does, but it doesn't brown the tires either.  And it lasts.

Chalk up another Meguiars Endurance user over here too. I've noticed however, that it is becomming rather diffuclt to find (the purple HIGH GLOSS stuff). But, I was able to pick-up a few cases from Meguiars.. so rest assured if anyone needs it feel free to PM me :)

I like the fact that with the E-HG that it lasts a considerably long time when compared to products from various competitors. It may seem a bit difficult to apply while trying to keep your hands clean, but the longevity of the product as well as its nice GRAPE scent more than make up for it.

As another alternative, I find that using Meguiars NXT Tech Protectant applied to tires with a damp sponge provides an equally nice shine, while creating minimal sling onto body panels after driving shortly after application.

I understand washing and waxing the car but why bother with the tires?  Is it just cosmetic or does it make them last any longer?
