About the 2L twin turbo diesel...

Quote
The reason the topline engine works so well is because of the manner in which the twin turbos come on line. A small turbo spools up to speed from the word go, which dispenses with the usual lag time. While this is going on, the larger turbo is getting up to speed. It then supplies the forced air needed to produce the engine's 201 hp and tireshredding 295 lb-ft of torque (at just 2,000 rpm).

This would be a great engine in the 1 or 3 series.  If they drop that into the 3 touring I may have to up the budget for our next car.

I would seriously consider a diesel 3 series over a 335

In other news, BMW just adopted the love-child of Kate Moss and a Dodge Charger:

Did this concept come from some secret BMW design office hidden somewhere in the PRC?

It seems they only went to Warwickshire, U.K. for their "inspiration." :-\

The overall sleekness, headlights, and the curve of the rear door's window resemble the Rapide, but those rear haunches are 100% Charger.

The whole thing is a little too Charger-ish for comfort.

MB CLS and AM Rapide look a lot better than this "concept" ... let's hope it translate into something better for the real world.  Audi is also coming up with a Coupe-Sedan thing.

Maybe not 100% Charger. I see a little Chevy Malibu in there too. :D :P

Weak auto margin leads to BMW first quarter profit slump

Reuters / May 3, 2007 - 8:00 am /

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- First quarter pretax profit at BMW plunged 34 percent as higher launch costs for new models squeezed margins in its core automotive division, the company said today.

BMW shares slumped on the disappointing results as well as management's warnings that ramp-up costs would only begin to decline in the second half of the year and that raw material prices were higher than originally forecast.

Group earnings before tax fell to 852 million euros ($1.16 billion). But in the automotive division, they plunged 20 percent to 609 million euros ($828.3 million), managing a mere 5.3 percent return on sales that fell far short of last year's 6.8 percent margin.

"We expect business to increase noticeably in the coming months," CEO Norbert Reithofer said in a statement, confirming 2007 pretax profit would rise from last year's record level once a 372 million euros ($505.8 million) one-off gain was excluded.

During a conference call with reporters, BMW finance chief Stefan Krause declined to quantify the impact of launch costs for new models such as the upcoming facelifted 5 series and the 3 series with a retractable hard top, nor specify the burden from depreciation, foreign exchange effects or raw material costs.

BMW has said the extent of its profit growth would largely depend on the development in external factors such as raw material costs and currency headwinds, which combined to wipe out 844 million euros from its income statement last year.

PREMIUM PRICED AT DISCOUNT

"For the most part nothing has changed as far as our expectations go although it appears as if raw material markets are certainly an area where we apparently have to expect more of a burden at the moment," Krause said.

Krause, who expects launch costs to at least stay flat in the current quarter before declining thereafter, said the rise in sales costs of about 50 million euros ($68 million) to 1 billion euros ($1.36 billion) served as a good indication for the drop in profitability.

The Munich-based carmaker has for years enjoyed solid gains in retail volume, breaking vehicle sales records on the back of sporty new models such as the X3 SUV, the 1 series hatchback or the retro Mini subcompact.

Earnings growth and profitability have also been impressive compared to many other European rivals, who have made expensive blunders with product ranges, neglected cost bases or failed to hedge foreign exchange exposure.

But investors have not rewarded BMW's steady growth story, often pricing the German premium carmaker at a discount, even to mass market competitors such as Volkswagen.

Reithofer, who took the helm of BMW in September, has initiated the group's first comprehensive strategic review since 2001 to position it for the coming 10 years.

"BMW is indeed a cheap stock, but as the earnings continue to face downward pressure, we believe the stock is cheap for a reason -- a continuing theme of great products and great company, but from an investment perspective, we believe there are better stocks to own for 2007," Morgan Stanley wrote in a note.

BMW to build next X3 in U.S. to counter strong euro

Automotive News Europe
May 15, 2007 - 8:00 am

MUNICH (Reuters) – BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, will build the next-generation X3 mid-size sport utility vehicle in its U.S. plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the company said today.

"We will expand the production capacity of our U.S. plant in Spartanburg in the medium term from the current 140,000 to well over 200,000 vehicles per annum," CEO Norbert Reithofer said in a copy of a speech to be given at the carmaker's annual general meeting.

Reithofer confirmed the group's vehicle sales and earnings forecast for 2007, which foresees a rise in pretax profit adjusted for last year's one-off gain on a Rolls-Royce exchangeable bond and sales of over 1.4 million units.

The X3, first launched in January 2004 and refreshed in September of last year, is assembled in Austria by Magna Steyr, a unit of Canadian car parts giant Magna International.

BMW now builds Z4 roadsters and X5 SUVs in Spartanburg. It already has decided to build an all new coupe-shaped SUV crossover in Spartanburg dubbed the X6.

Reithofer, who has initiated the first strategic review at BMW since 2001, said in mid-March the group needs to build up its production volume in Spartanburg to roughly 200,000 units or more in the next two to three years to help hedge against currency fluctuations.

It built just 105,000 vehicles in Spartanburg last year.

Partly as a result, the company suffered adverse forex headwinds of 666 million euros ($902 million) in 2006 and another 677 million in 2005 given the strong euro.

BMW sold 31,291 units of the X3 in the United States last year, a marginal gain over the 30,769 delivered to customers in 2005.

Overall the group sold 114,000 units of the X3 last year worldwide, a gain of 3.0 percent.

No wonder BMW Durham is moving.

I'm looking at their careers page and the job description indicates BMW Canada is moving to a new facility, from Whitby to north Toronto at the east intersection of highways 404 and 407 in early 2009.

I really like where BMW Canada is now... very visible and in a nice facility. They're grown it a lot... and with the dealership portion moving can't see why they'd have to move. Unless the 401 is being expanded and using up their land or will be too close for comfort?

Who knows. I'll miss them being local to me though.

Parkview also owns Durham , for the past years or so
I also think they are moving to far west( should put beside Rona) also you will no be able to see much from the 401
I think they are having zoning problems as the sign has been up for over a years and still no work is beening done

Interesting. They'll be very close to the Hyundai, Mazda, and Suzuki Canada head offices in that case.

BMW to the purists: This 1's for you

Rick Kranz
Automotive News
June 4, 2007 - 1:00 am

DEATH VALLEY, Calif. -- BMW wants the upcoming 1 series to lure enthusiasts back into the fold.

The automaker identifies this group as former BMW owners who abandoned the brand because the 3 series got too big and too luxurious over the past 20 years.

"There are people who always loved BMW but, to be honest, loved some of the older stuff more because, for them, it was smaller, more compact, more pure," said Rich Brekus, general manager of product planning and strategy at BMW of North America LLC.

Brekus said a group of former 3-series owners who had cars in the 1980s and early 1990s fits this mind-set.

"The series has grown up, but some of them did not necessarily want the 3 series to grow up," Brekus said during a BMW event here last month. For them, "the older BMWs were more youthful."

He said the 1 series "is the purest BMW we have."

Although shorter than the 3 series, the 1 series shares some components with that model. When the 1 series goes on sale next year in the United States, it will be BMW's entry-level line.

Brekus said ride and handling will not be sacrificed despite a price below the 3 series. The 1 series will feel and drive like a BMW, he said.

The United States will get a 1-series two-door coupe; a convertible also is expected.

BMW sells a 1-series five-door hatchback in Europe that went on sale in 2003, and it recently unveiled a three-door hatchback. BMW has said that neither hatchback will be sold here.

They don't mention North American, only the USA so I suspect we might miss out on these.  But it would be nice if we got one with a diesel here.
