Its the heat range you have to satisfy for that engine as if its too cool you won't enjoy the perfomance as much as you should as it won't work perfect for you. I feel the kindest thing you can do is learn the heat ranges for your engine as choosing the correct plug can really make a world of difference on the life of your vehicle and enjoyment with it as well.  :)

How do I find out the proper heat? And will dealers typically change spark plugs for me if I do not purchase them at the dealership?

Yes most dealers will do the work if you just want to pay them the labour charges and not buy the parts from them. I occasionally do this myself if I am too busy or just don't feel like doing the work as I usually wholesale most of my parts I use wether its on my vehicles or someone else's I am working on. I don't have a hoist here in my shop but hopefully maybe in the next one I own. The prices have come down a long ways and they are now much more affordable then they ever were. For around $4500. you can own a 9000lb hoist now which will cover 99% of the stuff I do and pay for itself very quickly as well without charging too much for the repairs you do.  :)

Stick with the GM plug that is in it now.  No other plug will improve performance.  Plug type and number SHOULD be in your GM user manual.

I would look under the hood for the service sticker which will tell you which plug and gap for it is suggested for the engine you have. Shouldn't be hard to find at all.  :)

Years ago we carried a line of Motomaster V-Groove spark plugs, now we just sell them under their actual name, NGK V-Power. For the Windstar use Motorcraft plugs, NGK or Autolite would make an acceptable substitute. The Nitro came from Chrysler with Champion Platinium Power or Double Platinium depending on which engine this one has, stick with them.
