Mazda Canada Sets Annual Sales Record
    <<
--Sales exceed 81,000 for the first time in the Company's history--
    >>

RICHMOND HILL, ON, Jan. 3 /CNW/ - Mazda Canada set its third consecutive
annual sales record by retailing 81,007 vehicles in 2006, a 4% increase over
the 77,867 vehicles sold in 2005. Mazda increased sales of both passenger cars
and light trucks in 2006. Passenger car sales totalled 69,209 units,
representing a 2% year-over-year increase. Light truck sales of 11,798 units
represented a 14% increase over 2005.
"Breaking through the 80,000 sales barrier for the first time in our
history is quite an accomplishment, especially in such a competitive market,"
said Don Romano, President of Mazda Canada Inc. "This is a true testament to
our ability to design products that connect with Canadian consumers and the
strength of the Mazda brand," he continued.
Driving Mazda's growth in 2006 was the continuing strong demand for the
compact Mazda3 as well as a sharp increase in sales of its compact-size,
6-seat, Mazda5, MX-5 roadster and B-Series compact pickup truck. Sales of the
Mazda5 increased by 241% over 2005 to 8,694 units. MX-5 roadster sales of
1,582 units represent an 85% increase over its 2005 sales tally. The compact
B-Series pickup truck increased sales by 25% over 2005 to 2,811. The Mazda
CX-7 crossover SUV, introduced in May of 2006, also performed well in its
first eight months on the market with 3,338 units retailed. Mazda's
top-selling vehicle, the Mazda3, retained its position as the second best
selling car in Canada with a total of 47,933 sales in 2006, despite a 5%
decline from 2005.
Mazda closed 2006 by retailing 4,615 vehicles in December, a
year-over-year increase of 6%. In 2006, Mazda Canada set eight monthly sales
records: in February and in every month from June through December.

Really? A sharp increase in sales for the B-Series?

Good to see that the 3 is still selling strong.

Interesting...sales are down for Kia (-22%) in Canada for December, but up (66%) in the US.

Yeah, Kia's interesting in that their car sales really aren't where they should be in Canada. Way lower than competitors with similar products.

I thought Mazda would come in a little lower than they did in December, as there was only 1 MPV reported (normally it's around 300) and 0 Tributes. Mazda6 sales are also on the low side at 442 compared to 626 Sonatas, 1,300+ for Fusion, Jetta, Accord, G6, and 2,000 for Camry. But the CX-7 and Mazda5 are performing well which is helping.

Nice to see Suzuki up almost 27% over last year.  Now if only they'd send the real Swift over here...

(Noticed a lot of SX4s on the road in St. John's when I was home visiting my parents over the holidays.)

:iagree: I'd like to see the Swift here as well. I did see an SX4 the other day, and it didn't look bad at all, but there didn't seem to be much more room in the hatch than in the Yaris.

That seems to be the SX4's weak spot.  It definately has less cargo room that the Aerio hatch.  But it certainly looks better, and that should serve it well.

Ford's F-Series pickup and Honda's Civic compact have retained their titles as the most popular truck and car in Canada.

The F-Series also remained the top-selling vehicle in the country for the fourth-consecutive year in 2006 as the venerable pickup widened its lead over the Civic and the Dodge Caravan minivan, according to statistics from Ward's Automotive Reports.

In the car segment, the Civic increased its lead over its nearest rival, the Mazda3 compact, to more than 22,000 last year from about 16,000 in 2005. The Civic has been Canada's best-selling car for nine-consecutive years.

I wish Mazda would hurry up and push some incentives on their slow selling Mazda6.  I might be able to convince myself if they pushed $4k off the Mazda6 Sport GT-I4. =)

Agree, too many end of line models for Nissan, no sub-compact offering. Now profits per car is a different story ;)  What surprises me is the Altima still outsells the Sonata, 2:1 in December, it also outsells the good looking Mazda6 and that's weird considering Mazda is doing so well with the 3.  Now VW is doing extremely well with the Jetta and not to far behind the Accord!

Then look at how Camry's soaring  :o

Given the age of the Mazda6 I don't find it surprising that it's not keeping up with some of the competitors.  As SAM stated, the CX-7 and Mazda5 are certainly helping Mazda achieve its record-setting sales... however, with the 6 and 3 being yet another year older, I'd wager that Mazda's sales will dip a bit this year.  What new product have they got?  CX-9?  That's got to be a fairly limited number of sales versus the 3 and 6 and even CX7, no?

January '07MY Canadian sales are being reported now. Boy, the seasonality of January sales really depresses the figures.

Acura has been doing very, very well with the new MDX. It's doing a real number on RX.

For the first time in as long as I can recall, the Rabbit/Golf have significantly outsold the Jettas!

Mazda3 was only 18 units shy of the Honda Civic! Mazda6 had a decent month as well relative to competitors compared to previous months.

Last month the Amanti was the best selling non-truck Kia, this month the least with only 5 sales. The Rondo is out front on the car side now.

Volvo sold 1 C30 'coupe'.

I thought cars had to be delivered in order to be registerd as a sale, not just a deposit order.
