Horbury: Lincolns can't look like Fords
Design boss favors different sheet metal, launch schedule

Amy Wilson  |   |  Automotive News / November 13, 2006 - 1:00 am

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- In the future, Lincoln vehicles should sport mostly distinct exterior sheet metal and be introduced on a separate timetable from their Ford platform mates, Ford Motor Co.'s top U.S. designer says.

Lincoln and Mercury vehicle styling must diverge more sharply from that of their Ford-brand siblings, said Peter Horbury, North American design chief for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury.

The automaker has more work to do to separate the look of its domestic-brand vehicles, which are increasingly being built on common platforms, Horbury said.

"The next step is to be independent in the areas you can see, touch and feel," said Horbury, who was interviewed at a press event here. "We're more than half way but not all the way."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PETER HORBURY:
"There's no hiding the fact that the MKX is closely related to the Ford Edge and the MKZ is closely related to the Fusion."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge

The Lincoln MKS sedan, which will go on sale in 2008, will be the best example of separation, he said.

Based on the same platform as the Ford Five Hundred sedan, the concept version of the MKS shares "not a single piece" of its exterior with the Ford, Horbury said. The Five Hundred went on sale in 2004, and an updated version is due by mid-2007.

"To be honest, the more differentiation we can create, the more we can build a stronger brand for Lincoln, which stands on its own," Horbury said. "It also helps to make the Fords look like something else, like something special."

The level of exterior differentiation on other future Lincolns probably will fall somewhere between the MKS and the 2007 MKX crossover, he said. The MKX shares about 50 percent of its exterior sheet metal with the 2007 Ford Edge.

Finances dictate some level of commonality on Lincoln programs. "If you just use the (same) windows, you save a fortune," Horbury said.

Launching the vehicles on separate timetables will help divert attention from any similarities.

"There's no hiding the fact that the MKX is closely related to the Ford Edge and the MKZ is closely related to the (Ford) Fusion and the (Mercury) Milan," Horbury said. "But the way ahead will be a lot more individual."

Horbury said he has been somewhat surprised that the Zephyr, the MKZ's predecessor, has been accepted as a Lincoln and "not a Ford with a different grille." The sedan was launched as the Zephyr for the 2006 model year. It was given a new name, new engine and available all-wheel-drive for the 2007 model year.

Ford and Mercury vehicles are more likely to continue on closer launch timetables with more shared elements.

A distinct Mercury model would be nice, "but is it necessary?" Horbury said. Ford designers must make sure there is no confusion between the Fords and Mercurys, but they can do an awful lot with color and materials, he said.

Said Horbury: "If there's any confusion today, there will be less confusion going forward on what is a Lincoln, what is a Ford and what is a Mercury."

Ford used test drives to tweak Edge, MKX before Job 1

Amy Wilson  |   |  Automotive News / November 20, 2006 - 1:00 am

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. wanted a real-world gut check on the Ford Edge, the crossover deemed its most important product launch of 2006.

So at the end of September, the automaker placed four pre-production 2007 Edges and four pre-production units of its Lincoln MKX sibling in the hands of consumers in California. The consumers -- who normally drive rival Nissan Muranos, Lexus RX 330s or Cadillac SRXs -- were given 60 days to test drive Ford's crossovers and provide weekly criticism and feedback.

They haven't disappointed. Based on early critiques, Ford made several cosmetic fixes to the Edge and MKX in time for their Job 1 manufacturing launch Oct. 16.

Such last-minute changes are unusual, said Dave Pericak, program manager for the Edge and MKX. But the initiative is driven by Ford's realization that it must be more responsive to customer desires.

"That demonstrates how we're going to become more nimble," Pericak said. "We're seeing the results of that, and we were able to pull (those changes) ahead."

The fixes

To satisfy the consumers:

Ford added screening to the lower grille of the Edge and MKX to hide mechanical parts that were visible.

The automaker changed the center stack of the Edge instrument panel to a less-reflective color after complaints that the original created a distracting glare on the windshield.

Ford added a carpeted cover to the spare-tire compartment of the Edge and MKX after the test drivers said it looked too crude.

Ford also approved two functional changes for the vehicles based on the feedback, said Jeff Huber, fleet quality supervisor for Ford's new-model programs. He declined to provide details.

The California consumers continue to drive the Edge and MKX. Ford also gave six units of each nameplate to drivers in New Jersey and Atlanta. The automaker could make further modifications as running changes or for future model years, Huber said.

The Edge and MKX are expected to be on sale in mid-December, a few weeks later than initially planned.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Details, details
Ford made at least 3 last-minute changes on the 2007 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX before Job 1 production.
1. It inserted new screening in the lower grille.
2. It changed the finish on the Edge's instrument panel to reduce glare.
3. It added a spare-tire cover.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improving quality score

Ford quality chief Bennie Fowler and former Americas COO Anne Stevens initiated the feedback program, Huber said.

Although Ford has done customer-feedback programs in the past, this is a new approach. Ford is working with J.D. Power and Associates on the program.

Such customer-evaluation programs are becoming more prevalent among automakers, said Amy McFarren, J.D. Power senior manager. The company has offered the service for six years.

Participants typically end up making improvements, McFarren said. Even when a vehicle meets engineering specifications, customers can point out flaws.

"These type of projects allow (the automakers) to understand that, even if it's built to spec, it may not be meeting expectations," McFarren said. "It helps the engineering (and design) teams really shift their focus from 'Does it perform as designed?' to 'Was the design improper?' "

Participants generally score better on J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study and other evaluations, McFarren said.

Improved quality ratings should be a side effect of the Edge and MKX program, Ford officials said. But that wasn't the main motivator.

"This is definitely not solely targeted to trying to improve our IQS," Huber said. "This is trying to do the right thing for the customer."

Ford will jazz up Five Hundred sedan, other models for 2008

Bryce G. Hoffman / The Detroit News

Ford Motor Co. confirmed Tuesday that it will introduce refreshed versions of the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego sedans and the Ford Freestyle crossover next year.

Each of the vehicles will get "some significant enhancements" to the interior and exterior, and each will be equipped with Ford's new 3.5-liter V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, according John Felice, Ford division general marketing manager.

"It's a significant improvement in performance," Felice told analysts and investors at a conference hosted by Bank of America. "The products have much better curb appeal."

All three vehicles are based on the same common platform, and all three are produced at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant.

While each of the vehicles has been praised for its safety, ride and quality, none has done well in the marketplace. Critics have panned them because of their lackluster design and underpowered powertrains.

Felice said the improvements featured on the 2007 models will address these criticisms and make all three vehicles solid contenders in the marketplace

I agree, though it always irritated me how people criticize ford for this but don't mention the Camry-look-alike Lexus ES.

Lexus ES has always been a lux-version of Camry.

Ford assembles $18 billion restructuring package

Amy Wilson  |   |  Automotive News / November 27, 2006 - 8:42 am

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. said today that it plans to obtain a financing package totaling $18 billion to help fund its restructuring.

The automaker said it expects to complete the package by Dec. 31. Upon completion, Ford Motor expects to boost the liquidity for its automotive operation to approximately $38 billion, consisting of cash and available credit lines.

The extra money will provide a liquidity cushion against a recession or other unanticipated events, Ford said in a prepared statement. It also will address negative cash flow.

As much as $15 billion of the financing packaging will be secured with Ford's automotive assets, the company said. The pending financing transactions include:

A new five-year senior secured revolving credit facility of approximately $8 billion. It is intended to replace Ford's existing unsecured credit lines of $6.3 billion.

A senior secured term loan of approximately $7 billion.

Unsecured capital market transactions of approximately $3 billion. These may include unsecured notes convertible into Ford common stock.

The size of individual elements may vary, depending on market conditions, Ford said.

The assets to be leveraged for a secured portion of the package include the automaker's U.S. manufacturing plants and substantially all other domestic auto assets.

Those other assets include: certain intellectual and real property; certain intercompany payables and notes; all or a portion of stock of certain subsidiaries including Ford Motor Credit Co. and Volvo; and as much as $4 billion of domestic cash without restriction on its use.

Credit Suisse analyst Chris Ceraso said in a note that the financing deal removes Ford's near-term risk of bankruptcy.

"On the plus side, equity owners do not have to worry about Ford running out of money in the next few years while new CEO Alan Mulally tries to fix the business," Ceraso said. "On the minus side, this could be an indication that the expected cash burn over the next couple of years is worse than the market currently anticipates."

Ford expects to burn through about $8 billion in cash in 2006. Before the financing package, it expected to finish the year with about $20 billion.

Workers get sneak peek at future cars

Bryce G. Hoffman / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. workers and retirees got a glimpse of the company's future Monday -- including an all-new subcompact car, the next-generation F-150 pickup and a re-imagined Explorer sport utility vehicle-- during a series of morale-building forums at Cobo Arena.

The event was closed to the media and Ford required attendees to sign confidentiality agreements, but The Detroit News spoke with a number of employees and retirees afterward. Most came away enthused and confident that Ford has enough hot new vehicles in the pipeline to help fuel a turnaround.

The event, called "Showroom of the Future," was a first for Ford and offered a look at vehicles that will go into production between now and 2010. Many had never been seen outside of Ford's closely guarded design studios in Dearborn.

Topping the list of surprises was a prototype for a Ford subcompact car that would fill a glaring hole in the automaker's lineup.

Mark Fields, president of Ford's Americas group, has been talking about building a small, stylish and fuel-efficient "B-car" since taking over the automaker's domestic operations last fall. But he had yet to offer so much as a sketch of what that vehicle would look like until Monday.

The four-door sedan features a three-bar grille and wraparound headlamps. It's powered by a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine already used in Europe, though new options could be available by the time the car goes into production in 2009 or 2010. It is designed to compete with the Honda Fit.

"If they brought it out now, it might hit the mark," said analyst Jim Hall of AutoPacific Inc. in Troy, who is familiar with the vehicle. "But they can't bring it out now."

Ford also unveiled two redesigned versions of its stalwart F-150 pickup Monday. The new F-150, which is expected to go into production in 2008, borrows from the bolder look of Ford's Super Duty pickups.

"It's an in-your-face (grille)," said Hall, adding that it will take more than good looks to guarantee the F-150's future success.

"A lot of it is going to be determined by how it drives and how it does in fuel economy."

The F-series is facing stiffer competition than ever. General Motors Corp. has new versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra coming to market right now and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. is about to introduce its first true full-size pickup.

In addition to substantially refreshed styling, the revamped F-150 will offer new powertrain options, including a diesel engine. However, that will not be offered on the initial version.

Ford also showed a photo of a next-generation Ford Explorer codenamed ORE -- which stands for On-Road Explorer. The design was more sporty than rugged and the vehicle was based on a car platform rather than that of a truck.

Also shown for the first time was the production version of Ford's "people mover," a full-size crossover based on the Fairlane concept shown at the Detroit auto show in 2005.

The unnamed vehicle still features the Fairlane's squared-off sides and a white roof.

Ford also unveiled refreshed versions of its Focus compact car -- with a chrome two-bar grille -- the midsize Fusion sedan, the Five Hundred large sedan and the Mustang coupe.

"We're definitely delivering the product," said Bruce Whittle, a supervisor in Ford's chassis section, who was excited about the vehicles he saw at Cobo but wouldn't reveal details.

The Lincoln brand's new MKS flagship sedan was a favorite of some attendees. A prototype was unveiled at last year's North American International Auto Show, but participants got to see the production version Monday, which will not arrive in showrooms until 2008.

No Mercury vehicles were on display, but photos were shown of refreshed versions of Montego and Milan sedans and the Mariner SUV.

The highlight of "Showroom of the Future," most agreed, was the tiny new subcompact.

Ford insiders say it will be built on a new platform being developed by Mazda Motor Corp., which Ford controls. Known internally as the B2E platform, it will also provide the basic architecture for the next-generation Ford Fiesta and Mazda2.

Other versions are also planned for the U.S. market, including a small crossover.

Ford spokeswoman Sara Tatchio confirmed that the company did unveil "one possible design" for the subcompact Monday, but would not discuss details of the vehicle.

"We'll get a B-car as fast as we can with the right design and right business case," she said.

Ford was already well on its way to delivering a subcompact SUV for the U.S. market when Fields took over last year. But he killed that project, saying it was designed to compete on price alone, not on style or quality.

Ford's focus shifted to developing an American version of the new Mazda. At one point, Ford hoped to build the new subcompact in Mexico, expanding one of its existing plants to accommodate the new vehicle.

But Ford's financial woes have called that plan into question.

"Right now, we're planning to build the B-car in Brazil," said one person familiar the plan. "But that changes daily."

This photoshop of the Fiesta is not new, and it is of course based on the Iosis concept. The small Mazda and the Fiesta are evil twins, sharing most of the underpinnings and being manufactured in the same factory in Spain. When the 2008 Fiesta arrives it will also bring a more youthfull interior with some interesting developments in the HMI. Expect a menu-based control system for some entertainment devices. And can we expect a multilink suspension? The latest reports don’t suggest that, although it would be very nice if Ford would lead the pack in this class like it did with the Focus back in 1998. 10 years since the introduction of the Focus-I could well be cellebrated by giving a multilink suspension to the Fiesta and being again the absolute leader in handling.

Ford replaces manager at Edge plant in Ontario

Amy Wilson  |   |  Automotive News / November 28, 2006 - 4:42 pm

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is switching leaders at its Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant in the midst of a troubled launch of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers.

Oakville plant Manager Frank Gourneau has been reassigned to a job in Dearborn, Mich., working on vehicle-launch processes, a Ford spokeswoman said. Gourneau is now chief engineer for new programs in Ford's advanced and manufacturing engineering group.

Two other managers in Oakville are no longer working at the plant, sources said. It's not clear whether they have left the company or have been reassigned. The Ford spokeswoman declined to comment.

Ford named Ken Minielly the new plant manager in Oakville. He most recently headed Ford's car-assembly and stamping plant in Wayne, Mich. For Minielly, a 33-year Ford employee, it is a return to Oakville, where he was an assistant manager in 2002 and 2003.

Replacing Minielly at the Wayne plant is Dale Wishnousky. He most recently worked as plant manager at Ford's Atlanta assembly plant, which was idled in October.

The changes in plant managers were announced internally last week and were effective Monday, Nov. 27, Ford spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said.

She downplayed any connection to the delayed launch of the Edge and MKX.

"These changes are not uncommon," Gattari said. "We rotate plant managers a lot."

But it is unusual to switch leadership in the middle of a launch, others said. Ford started building the Edge and MKX at Oakville this fall with plans to have them at dealerships before the end of November. Ford announced nearly two weeks ago that launch problems will keep the automaker from getting vehicles out until December.

"The launch is progressing, and we're building vehicles as we planned," Gattari said. "Ken Minielly has a great amount of experience in assembly operations, and he will complement the launch of the Edge and MKX as well as future products at Oakville."

Word was Frank (former PM at OAC) was pissed that the Edge/MKX was not being produced in the USofA, and also was pissed at being stuck in a Canadain Plant. All parties will be mucho happier now that the political climate has been tempered. ;D
No more excuses Ford, get those supplier bugaboos sorted out and start shipping those new Edgey products.

Ford forecasts $17 billion cash outflow from 2007-09

Amy Wilson  |   |  Automotive News / November 29, 2006 - 10:52 am

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. expects to go through $17 billion in cash during the next three calendar years, with more than half of that occurring in 2007.

The cash outflow primarily will be the result of substantial operating losses in Ford Motor's automotive operations through 2008 and cash expenditures related to employee departures. Ford detailed the expected financial results in a regulatory filing today.

Ford said it also expects automotive cash inflows of about $4 billion in the 2007-2009 time period. That reflects the use of $3 billion in long-term VEBA assets, proceeds from the receipt of government tax refunds and affiliate tax payments, and proceeds from planned divestitures of its Aston Martin and Automobile Protection Corp. units, offset partially by pension contributions.

That results in a net cash burn of $13 billion through 2009. Ford said it expects to have $38 billion on hand by the end of this year, including $18 billion in new financing it is seeking now. Ford said by the end of 2009 it expects to have $25 billion on hand.

Ford also said it expects an automotive operating-related cash outflow of about $3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2006, as well as restructuring-related cash expenditures of $500 million to $1 billion.

Beginning in 2007, Ford Motor Credit Co. is expected to suspend regular dividend payments. The company also said Ford Motor earnings will deteriorate in 2007 primarily because of lower earnings at Ford Credit and higher interest costs associated with a higher level of debt at Ford.

Ford said it expects Ford Credit's profitability in 2008 and 2009 to improve from 2007 levels.

The disclosures were contained in a presentation Ford Motor made today to prospective lenders and investors. Ford said Monday, Nov. 27, that it is seeking an $18 billion financing package. Ford intends to use its plants, office buildings and other automotive assets as collateral to secure $15 billion of the financing.

Ford also said it expects to continue to invest about $7 billion annually in new products through 2009. That's about the same level of product-related investment as the past few years.

The German weekly newspaper Wirtschaftswoche reports Ford Motor Co. is examining possible options for exporting cars from Europe to the U.S.

Quoting Ford Werke unit sales executive Juergen Stackmann, the report says some Ford U.S. executives are interested in importing the new Ford Mondeo, which could be sold in the U.S. under the Mercury brand.

The new Focus, S-Max and Galaxy also are possible candidates for export to the U.S., the report says.

MKII is for the C1 EuroFocus. :)

I would like Ford NA to introduce many of the Euro Fords here as Fords, NOT badged Mercurys.

Ford NA has to stop and ask themselves, "Why are the North American consumers NOT buying new Fords?
And then ask themselves "Why are the international consumers buying SO many new Fords"

Mercury brand has had its day, many moons ago. Ford will be lucky if Mercury sells 150,000 units this year, and that is with aggressive incentives, which means low profit margins.

Ford has to gain credibility again with the buying public, and I think the euro Ford variants is what is needed to stop the bleeding, as far as the car segment. If they rebadge these euro models mentioned as Mercurys, Ford will be forced to price them as entry level Premium segment, and market them the same way Honda has done with Acura.  I do not think this is wise for Ford, as Ford needs more then to fill a niche market, especially the very competitive entry premium segment. Ford needs to find buyers starting from the B segement (economy) through to the D segment (full size). Ford has their niche market cars, with Lincoln, and Volvo & Landrover. No sense in competing against yourself
