Meet "Suzie"...
« on: November 07, 2006, 02:06:56 am »
Hi, guys!

So I've got a new car...Suzie, replacing Lucy (my Tempo). I spent all afternoon test driving her, with mechanics and this crazy Honda fanatic who can tell you just about anything you'd ever want to know about an older Honda.

She's a 1986 Honda Civic two door hatchback with manual windows, manual locks, manual transmission, a choke and shaggy black seat covers. Minimal rust, but its not the original paint color. It's a sky blue that's begun to flake on top so in a bit I guess it will be blue with grey polka dots.

I test drove her along Highway 2 (up to 140km/hr...no wiggles, wobbles or instability of any kind). The steering wheel stayed totally straight, and she felt solid. The clutch felt a little soft but the mechanic said she's got a lot of use left if I drive properly (I thought the previous owner said she'd replaced it, but I heard wrong). The front end is brand new, the front brakes are 4 months old, 4 6-week-old All-Season tires and the muffler is a year old. The previous owner also just had a tranny flush and rad flush. Also, a file full of every service record and repair receipt for the last three years was given to me when I signed the bill of sale. These people have really looked after the car. I talked her down to $700.00 because the windshield is cracked, and the rear brakes are at 30%. I had a pre-purchase inspection done (for free!!!) at a local shop and the mechanic seemed honest. He recommended this old fart that kicks around town and owns a farm out by Ininisfail. Apparently on his property he has over 100 old Hondas (Accords, Preludes, Civics, etc) and he restores and sells older Hondas. So I went and talked to this guy. He looked at the car, took it for a spin, and brought it back beaming. He said he was "impressed by yet another impeccable product from Honda".

The only thing is...in the paper it said the car had 215 000km on it...and the odo says it has 293 000km. But both the mechanic and the Honda lover said that 300 000km is nothing on a Honda; especially one that's been maintained so well.

I'm feeling elated with my purchase. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Can you transfer a vehicle in Alberta with a cracked windshield?  Manual chokes are nice.  Seems good.  Future repairs are only natural.  Find out if your car's motor is an interference or non interference type.  It makes a big diff.  Maybe you can get thru the winter with no fixes.

SLOW down and LIVE.  :)

The windsheild crack will fail the insurance inspection.  I thought all Honda's had the interference engines?

Nice buy Wanna...sounds to be a well maintained vehicle that may serve your city putting around nicely.

Honda clutches are soft by nature, might be normal.

If it makes you feel better, my bro put about 450,000 kms on the original engine of his '92 Civic Si before he had to put another engine in, and then sold the car for $1200 with more than 625,000 kms on the odo.

Not sure about Alberta but I seem to recall that in Ontario, a crack is "legal" if it starts at the bottom of the windshield and finishes there as well.  It can't go up, or to the side.

Nice buy Wanna!

I see no reason why you shouldn't take it on the highway.  Saving $150 in car rental per road trip can buy a lot of preventative maintenance.

Congratulations Wanna!!

Sounds like you did a thorough investigation. I also would put a lot of weight into what that Honda expert with a bunch of Hondas said. And the full service records is reassuring, despite the error in the odo number in the newspaper.

Like Dorin said, sounds like this car will pay for itself in money saved from car rentals. Plus, she's fuel-efficient.

Liberty with a little Honda!  :drive2: :bounce:

Congrats on the new (to you car).  :) Mileage is not a factor in well made, well looked after cars.  :) One is my cars has over 300,000Km on it, the other is passing the 242,000 KM mark this week. I waste a lot of gas.

Your insurance company will need a safety inspection paper, need it to get the pink card and to register. But any qualify mechanic can sign the paper.  :)

Sounds good. Old hondas seem to make very good beaters, so many of them are on the road still.

When I take my beater on the road in the winter I have a bag with an old skidoo suit,tuque/boots, etc, as well as packing a cell phone and a CAA membership. A few tools don't hurt anything either.

I have my tool bag in the back, booster cables, blankets, extra mittens and hats (and SOCKS!), first aid kit and of course my CAA/AMA membership.

I'll go take pictures now. Of Lucy, too....
