Let me start by saying that anecdotal accounts like mine are hardly a scientific basis upon which to base one's tire buying decisions, however.....

I like these tires.  I didn't buy them because they were cheap.  I bought them because they were a good price, and while I could afford the Michelin X-Ice again (the tires that I was replacing), I was looking for something with a few less winter traction compromises.  I like how quiet the Michelins were but wasn't convinced about their grip in severe conditions...either deep snow, hard pack, or ice.  The Goodyear Nordics on the other hand, have impressed me with their bite and generally communicative, honest nature.  They dig very nicely.  They brake well on hard pack and ice (even without studs) and are predictable.  They aren't easily confused by rutted surfaces.  I did get a relatively wide cross section in that I bought them in the same 205/60R15 size of my OE summer tires.  They are on a relatively light (2800 lb.) sedan so I do feel them squirming around a bit on the snow trying to "find their set" but they are a bunch better in the really ugly stuff than my Michelins were even when they were new and at full tread depth.

I am not given to hyperbole but I am in a (maybe not unique) position where I can compare two different brands of tires on the same car.

I'm pleased.  They are noisy...no question...but only at speeds less than 40 km/h do I notice them.  If I think of anything else positive or negative to share about them in the coming weeks I will post.  Otherwise I would recommend them highly regardless of their price.  One more thing.  I am picky about my tires.  I ended up with the Michelins X-Ice because I tried the Nordic Ice Trac (the BF Goodrich-made predecessor of these excellent Nordics) and had Canadian Tire take them off within 2 days of buying them I was so disappointed in them.

What car are you running them on?

I replaced my Artic Alpins with a set of Good Year Nordic's on a GM N body. I really like the Nordics, they are far superior in loose snow and slush than the Michelin's ever were. Hard packed snow and ice traction has been on par to the Michelin's. The one difference is that went on a -1 sizing for the nordics, 195-65-15 VS OEM 215-60-15, I give them 2 thumbs up

I have the Goodyear Nordic on my new 2007 Accord SE V6. I mounted 205/65R15 in place of the 215/50R17 stockers. The Nordics have been great so far and have been one of the best winter tires I have owned to date (comparing to Michelin Alpins, Yok A633's, Kelly Wintermark's). I also have them studded, which produces more noise but provides excellent traction on icy roads.

Mid-term Report Card Time:
--------------------------
I've now driven on these tires through an incredibly mixed bag of weather the last 3 days, including centre-bare, hard-packed 400-series highway, slushy and greasy secondary roads and parking lots and deep powder snow-covered country roads and I can honestly say that they have not put a foot wrong.  It's been really cold too, though today is almost unseasonably warm.  These are very competent tires.  I find that they lack in ride comfort...suffering from a fair amount of impact harshness, but they possess relatively stiff sidewalls and are surprisingly agile in the corners.  I do not drive like a nanny, but neither do I overdrive the conditions.

My confidence in these tires is increasing as I am becoming accustomed to them.  I can feel a bit of a grumbly knobbiness (hope you can guess what that means) as I turn the wheel at speed but I assume that is because of the relatively heavy, square shoulders of the tire.  This is a really good severe service winter tire.  I readily accept the small compromises in ride comfort in exchange for the wide range of winter driving attributes.  If this tire was a hockey player, I would characterize him as a well-rounded two-way player that, while not flashy, is a good third line grinder that doesn't mind throwing the gloves off from time to time and mucking for the puck in the corners.

...whoa, did I say that?  ;-)

The Nordics are on sale at Canadian Tire for 40% off right now.  I can get 4 tires along with steel OE-fit wheels for $659.83 (incl tax).  I think I'll do it since my tax refund will cover the cost nicely. :)

I'm planning a 3 hour road trip in a couple weeks on, what I hope will be, a dry Interstate highway that allows speeds up to 75 mph.  Should I have the Nordics off before I make that road trip?

When I had my P5 I drove from Toronto - California with mine on.  Since I had to cross a couple of mountain passes I thought it was safer to have them on than not.

I picked up the Nordics today and I think they're quieter than the Michelin MX4s the car came with.

Thought I'd mention, Goodyear is closing the Valleyfield, PQ plant which made these tires. :(
Goodyear is trying to get out of the "private brand" tire business as it isn't profitable to make low-priced tires in North America any longer. No idea if they will continue to make them elsewhere for Canadian Tire or if this is the last of them.

Supply of the Goodyear Nordics at CT will not be affected for next season.

How do you guys find the Nordics are from a stopped position? Getting going after stopping at intersections was my only problem this year using my performance all seasons tires <---  ???

I'm very glad I decided to put the Nordics on for a couple weeks after the purchase last Wednesday.  Winnipeg received a few centimetres of heavy, wet snow which allowed me to test the Nordics quite well.  I'm very pleased with them under braking and acceleration.
