But I seriously don't see how driving an older car makes me ill-suited to reviewing new ones. But how 'bout this: you let me borrow your 3-series cabby for a week, and I'll tell you if you bought the right car. How's that sound? Nah, that's old too.

I have 2 new cars, and it's silly I never drive them! That's the way auto journalism works. Why would you need to own a new car that you never drive? |

Two new cars? What else did you get? You've got the Mazda3 and that old clunker of a Honda that you keep pulling more parts off, but what else? |

Someone that owns a 10 year old car and gives out car advise is like a priest giving out marriage advise
I do not agree with that statement. An objective stance and a constant 'touching' of the new vehicles are more relevant in forming views and recommendations than somebody who 'owns a new car.' I would say regardless of what vehicle one has as a personal vehicle, the key is to have access to sample many different cars and to form an opinion on it based on what he/she has seen with the competitors. I would say that people who are armchair car testers and gives car advice is like a plumber giving electrical advice. I agree with MdX5 on this issue. |

Since he gets to drive new cars without forking out money on his own, maybe he's good for giving out financial advice too while he's at it?
I guess I'm one of the few that actually thinks AJAC is pretty fair. I tend to agree with their winners... or at least agree with one of their top 2, and see it relevant and useful. |

stickshift - I was not meaning to impinge on any auto journalist's work ethic or dedication to their job - my point is that the awards process is not that meaningful and sometimes is severely flawed, resulting in "best cars" being, once the history is written, far from that. I am sure you put a lot of effort into this job you enjoy, and I'm sure you do it well (from what I have seen). These "awards" however, get lumped in the public's eyes with the wonderful stuff from JDPower & Asso. - prostitutes to the car cos.
It's cool, ovr. No offense taken, and I hope it didn't come across that I had taken offense. Just giving my point of view on the awards thing. Airbalancer: trust me, if I could afford a newer car, I'd own one (and in normal circumstances, I would have one, but I just bought a house instead). But I seriously don't see how driving an older car makes me ill-suited to reviewing new ones. But how 'bout this: you let me borrow your 3-series cabby for a week, and I'll tell you if you bought the right car. How's that sound? Seriously, though: many of you guys know who Jeremy Cato is, right? Last time I spoke to him at an event (earlier this year) I found out he doesn't own a car period (because he has no need due to the number of press cars he drives). Does that make him a bad auto writer? I think someone who owns a 10 year old car..... has saved a lot of money!! I personally like to see old cars that are still loved and well taken care of by their owners. I'd like to keep my TSX forever (I know, I know, with my love of cars, can I really keep a car more than a few years?), but I think it's cool when people do that. |

I think someone who owns a 10 year old car..... has saved a lot of money!! You got that right I'd like to keep my TSX forever (I know, I know, with my love of cars, can I really keep a car more than a few years?), but I think it's cool when people do that. I have owned so many older cars, and experienced so many problems with long-term repair bills that I haven't had a car for more than 3 years in the past decade. It's an expense, to be sure, but it's the price we decided to pay for peace of mind. Our plan for our current auto is to keep it for 3 years, and then decide year by year whether to replace it or keep it. |

Uh, then you might not like me very much in real life! I don't remember the last time I changed the oil in my beater Hyundai, and my sister-in-law and her boyfriend drive it more than I do these days (they live downtown and don't own a car, but they use mine when I'm not using it). It hasn't aged well and is up for replacement - after I figure out how much a dent owning a house is going to put in my budget! |

back to the AJAC choices ... was looking at the fuel economy numbers and the RAV-4 V6 got 9.6L/100km with a 269hp V6 ... while the CR-V with a fairly efficient I4 only gets 9.4L/100km How does Toyota do it? Are those real world numbers? |

What were the reasons 2007 Toyota Camry LE edged out 2007 Nissan Altima despite comments from AJAC members that Altima had better materials, more power, CVT, fuel economy ? |

Owning a house definitely limits your spending options, but on the other hand, it's like a big forced savings plan. Works for people like me who have little discipline with money. |

That Altima is intriguing me, especially that CVT. I didn't like the 2006 model's looks at all. I like the 2007's looks a little better, and it really does sound good on paper.... |
