Newbie Question on Steel Rims (Need Advice)
« on: October 30, 2006, 05:59:59 pm »
Hey all,

Just a quick question, I am interested in purchasing some winter boots for the MY06 Civic. Been to few of the Tire shops, they only carry universial steel rims, I have heard from one of the Honda Mechanics that those universial steel rims are a big nono on the Civic. They said the offsets might be different and the tires will be unsecure and can be fallen off easily.

The Civic is a HWY driven car, the Honda dealer keeps recommending that I should get Michellin X-Ice, but from what I have heard those are for the snow days only and if you are driving on the dry roads the treads will be gone really soon. Since i live in Markham, we don't have snow that frequent I think Winter performance tire might be a better buy? With all the experts here I hope I can learn more about this =D Thanks  ;D

Edit: I have read the previous post by Morty with regards to the winter tire choices TireTrends - 2006 Honda 16" Winter Tires

Good options from the list inlcude:

Hankook W300
Kumho KW17
Bridgestone Blizzak LM25
Michelin PA2
Dunlop Winter Sport 3D

My Arctic Alpins (the predecessor to the X-Ice) have gone 70,000 km on my Mazda pickup being used summer and winter, including hauling full truckloads of stuff back and forth to university. So they actually lasted pretty well on bare (and hot!) pavement for me. I'm getting the X-Ice at the end of the week.

Steel wheels will not fall off unless they are mounted incorrectly, not torqued or if you are using incorrect hardware. The unversals will not fall off they just arent hub-centric. This means there are centred to the studs/bolts not the hub and you could experience vibration problems. Best to go with an OE Honda wheel.

acck...we do install for Vancouver customers. However, we do not have an install network as of yet.

I bought my Kumho KW-19 from Morty, already mounted on steel rims and balanced. They ship like this, four wheels at once. It is even cheaper in combo, I believe.
Very fast turn-around from Tiretrends and great overall shopping experience. I only had to take my aluminum wheels off and put new steeles on.
