My view is that the media is under tremendous competitive pressure for ratings (or circulation) and are quite willing to spin a story in a way that will create controversy.  It's always been that way, but it's getting worse because of the proliferation of media.

You have to take everything you read or see with a grain of salt.

My first eye-opener was during the SARS outbreak.  If you watched CNN's coverage you would think everyone in T.O. was wearing a mask.

Hey, articles like this also meant that I got a killer deal on an Audi 5000CS turbo quattro. 
I'm even threatening to put it back on the road this winter.
