Ppl that drive with their noses on the steering wheel risk serious injury in the event of airbag deployment. Artic - get her to relax and move back in the seat.  Wink

My wife drives like that, very close to the steering wheel because she can't reach the pedals comfortably and to increase visibility over the 'bonnet' hood.

Its changing now with practice. The Camry has telescopic steering wheel, heigh adjustable seat. Makes a huge difference in her posture and confidence.

If in the event of a head-on collision, there's a strong chance your wife will break her nose.  That's why airbags "kill" or "do more harm than good" because people are extremely close to the airbag (for whatever reason).

Hopefully the tilt and telescopic steering wheel help, Umro!

I think the major contention is

1. Side airbags should be standard (increases the base cost)
2. Side airbags should be available as stand-alone option, not packaged.

Efficacy of side airbags is widely accepted, need for proper driver training is widely accepted.

Whether driver should be retested, methodology, targetting by insurance companies is contested.

Not really.  If there's a nut-job behind the wheel of an SUV that broad-sides me after blowing through a red-light, you can bet your ass I'll be glad that the side and curtain airbags were mandated.

Well, in that case, I'll be sure to scan the road ahead, and be prepared to stop during an inetersection if I see a nut-job running a red-light.  No wonder driving takes up so much energy.

If you're in the intersection and someone runs a red you'll see him all right but probably not until after he hits you. Even an extremely attentive driver can't see everything that happens on the road.

Stuff happens, even to the best of drivers.

I want to see front and side Jiffy-Pop airbags standard.  I want to be safe, but I also want to be fed.

Am I asking too much?

Ofcourse.  But here you're implying that I didn't see him/her before I even approached the intersection.

If someone is going quite fast, enough so that one can accurately judge that they won't be stopping in time, one can easily counter-act and slow down enough to avoid him/her.

But if I couldn't see him at all, then yes, having side-airbags would be much, much helpful.  But then again, what're the chances of that happening?  0.01%?  I'll take that chance, rather than having to sell my fairly brand-new car, while taking a huge depreciation hit, just to buy another new car with more airbags.

Ofcourse I don't want to be a statistic, but being all paranoid because of lack of side/side-curtain airbags in my car is not the best idea.

Again, let's not act like our neighbours down South.

And just for the record, my next car will most definitely have side/side-curtain airbags as it's better to be safe than sorry.

I really mean to say that almost all women sit too close to the wheel in comparison to say, myself.  Smiley  Wife's 5.7 so I think that pretty well represents average height.    However, Camry apparently has smart bags (so says a light on the dash board) and supposedly the front airbags deploy according to seat position and impact severity,

Not mentioned much is the injury rate as it relates to knees and legs in women drivers.  They might have a foot between their chest and the steering wheel, but down at knee level it will be a matter of inches.  So for me when the 07 Camry was announced with knee airbags that sealed the deal.  I would not have got it other wise.  You will definitely see them pop out on most cars by next year or so.   Next Corolla and Accord for sure.

This is an interesting read on knee airbags http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/printer.jsp?id=32423

I personally do not want to buy a car with them. My knees are too close to the dash and I'd be afraid it'd shatter a part of me once deployed. The first vehicle I remember with one was the Kia Sportage  Cheesy

Wel it is easier to avoid side impacts if one does not live in Victoria as in the rest of the country most of the drivers are alive. Grin

However,  I have side and curtain airbags and would be loth to buy a new car without them...just in case.  They seem like a very benign technology to me... helped on by some very massive looking pieces of forged alloy on the BMW that provide and extra "door catch" to help the side not get stove in so far.   ( the look as if they transmit forces from the (relatively) fragile door onto strong B-pillar
