My 90 Jetta won't die
« on: October 04, 2006, 01:37:17 am »
I've had a 90 Jetta for almost two years.  I paid $1400 for it with 190K kms.  I know there's been bad press and reviews about VW's, but honestly, this car just keeps on going and going and going.  I'm ashamed to admit that I've only done one oil change on it, which was this summer. I don't drive it every day, maybe 3 X a week.  I kept expecting it to just die, and didn't want to spend anything on it.  Last winter someone changed lanes into my passenger side door, and insurance paid me $1500 and let me keep the Jetta...after that I really was expecting it to keel over..but it just kept going.

I've taught my two sons age 15 and 17 to drive it, it's a 5spd tranny, and one of them will inherit it after I take possession of my new 1997 Acura 2.2 CL.  I just wanted to give my experience with an older VW.

Cheers!

I'm totally with you too! We have a 92 Jetta that we've owned for almost 10 years! It was about 5 years old with only 93000km on it when we bought it and it is now approaching 305000km. It's been good to us and quite reliable despite being on its 3rd starter and 3rd alternator and umpteenth exhaust system.

I think a lot of the reliability problems started in 93 when they started building the Mexican crap. I love VWs but I honestly don't think that I would buy anything made after 1992.

?!  If I had a car that had had SIX separate mechanical failures that left it unable to start, I'm not sure I'd call it "quite reliable."

3rd means its been replaced twice, therefore 4 times ;)
