VW's hometown defies auto industry gloom

Automotive News Europe
April 6, 2009 09:56 CET

WOLFSBURG (Reuters) -- Inside one of the world's biggest car plants, there is no sense that global auto demand is in freefall as Germany heads into its worst recession for six decades.

Volkswagen's presses here in Wolfsburg thud and hiss as they crush metal into shape, orange sparks fly and workers whistle to music on the radio as they screw on headlights and radiators.

Few towns rely as heavily on the auto economy as Wolfsburg in northern Germany. Built in 1938 to make the "peoples' car," about half the town's workers have a job directly linked to VW. Yet the mood is far from depressed.

"Things are positive, order books are bulging," said Claudio Gravina, who has worked in several departments at the plant. "There's no panic."

So far, a government bonus scheme has been shoring up demand -- German new car registrations jumped 21.5 percent in February and it was one of only two western European markets to grow, according to the European auto industry association, ACEA.

But another factor underpins the confidence. With some 178,000 workers in Germany, VW is too big to fail and the town knows it.

"VW is so crucial that no-one would let it collapse. The consequences would be unimaginable," Siegfried Kayser, head of Wolfsburg's Chambers of Industry and Commerce, said.

Among top VW models are the Golf, Passat, Touran and Jetta although its best known is probably the Beetle, originally the "peoples' car," which became a symbol of the 1960s hippie era as the "Love Bug."

The cafes are busy and shops are full in Wolfsburg's center, which is typical of German towns built up in the decades after World War Two 2 with its concrete, gray buildings.

"So far I can't see the financial crisis you read about in the papers," said baker Katja Hering, whose shop relies largely on VW employees for custom. "Next year might be bad but we've had our ups and downs before and we'll get through."

Wolfsburg is defined by VW. The factory -- which VW says is the world's biggest auto plant under one roof -- is big enough to house the principality of Monaco. Its brown brick facade and tall chimneys dominate the skyline.

Wolfsburg's main shopping street is named after Ferdinand Porsche, who designed the Beetle.

VW sponsors Germany's top league Wolfsburg football club; schools and colleges bear the name of VW or Porsche.

After World War Two, during which VW employed forced laborers for the Nazi war effort, the town flourished as the carmaker became synonymous with West Germany's economic miracle.

Now, the factory, which can make 3,400 cars a day, employs around 44,000 people. Another 11,500 work at suppliers in Wolfsburg, according to town statistics.

"Wolfsburg wouldn't be here without VW," said Kayser at the Chamber of Commerce. "There can't be a Plan B if the unimaginable were to happen to VW."

Investors have long criticized VW's above-average labor costs and have called on the state of Lower Saxony, which owns a 20 percent stake, to loosen its grip and allow a takeover.

A political battle is raging between the German government and the EU over a plan by Porsche to take full control of VW. The sports carmaker has raised its direct voting stake to just over 50 percent and said that could rise to 75 percent this year although under existing rules, Lower Saxony could veto that.

But others see VW as a vindication of the German social market model, which shuns the more aggressive shareholder-value focus of Anglo-Saxon capitalism.

They point to the problems being faced by General Motors and other U.S. carmakers and say Wolfsburgers are fortunate compared with workers at GM's German unit Opel, which is seeking billions in state aid and faces an uncertain future.

Wolfsburg mayor Rolf Schnellecke says state involvement has guaranteed a social approach among VW workers.

"VW has always been aware of its social responsibility and taken steps to avoid redundancies," Schnellecke said.

German government policies to save jobs are also helping. The government is, for example, subsidizing companies that put workers on short time and avoid layoffs. In February, around 15,000 Wolfsburg workers were on short time.

VW is also the biggest beneficiary of a measure in the government's stimulus package offering 2,500 euros ($3,304) to people who scrap old cars and buy new, fuel-efficient vehicles.

"(Investing in the) VW group is the best place to be to benefit from the scrapping incentives-related boom on the German car market," said Sal. Oppenheim analysts in a research note, citing VW's high exposure to Germany and the small car segment.

VW's underlying problems

VW's relative strength cannot mask underlying problems.

CEO Martin Winterkorn has warned VW faces one of the toughest years ever and has said he expects vehicle sales, revenues and earnings to decline.

"Wolfsburg isn't immune to the global crisis, we are not an island," Schnellecke said. "The incentives are keeping us going for now but the big question is what happens after that."

The town has sought to reduce its dependence on VW, which also owns Audi, Skoda and Seat, by building up services.

"We have known since the 1990s that jobs in the auto industry are heading down rather than up and we have branched out into other areas," said Schnellecke, a Wolfsburger by birth.

The service sector makes up 28 percent of Wolfsburg's economy, up from about 16 percent 20 years ago, but that is still a far lower share than in other cities, says Kayser.

Wolfsburg has tried to become a regional tourist centre and now has a science museum, art gallery and sports facilities.

But all roads lead back to VW. One of the top draws is the Autostadt, a VW theme park boasting 2 million visitors a year, who include car fanatics, buyers and children.

"Wolfsburg is where Volkswagen eats and sleeps," said Kayser. "It's impossible to free ourselves from such a colossus."

VW projected to overtake GM this year as world's No. 2 producer

Automotive News Europe
April 7, 2009 06:01 CET

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Volkswagen AG will overtake U.S. rival General Motors this year to become the world's second-largest automaker by volume, market research company R.L. Polk Germany said on Monday.

Global production of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles is forecast to fall 19 percent, or two million units, to 52.8 million vehicles this year -- the lowest output since 1998, Polk said.

While GM will suffer a 31 percent drop in production, VW will likely only see a slice of some 15 percent, thanks in part to its low exposure to the U.S. auto market, where industry sales have plunged 38.4 percent this year.

"Volkswagen will therefore overtake ... GM and advance to become the new number two after Toyota," Polk said in a statement.

Polk expects global car output to increase in 2010 again, with strong growth rates in the next two years that allow the market to achieve a record production level of more than 70 million vehicles in 2012.

So I noticed vw.ca has started advertising on TV about their "0% a.p.r finance for ALL vehicles!" deal. It's certainly caught my attention and I'm considering VW again....

... well I dunno if I'm SERIOUSLY considering getting a new VW - what with the "recession" and all - but 0% interest is definitely more alluring than 3.9%.

Volkswagen Q1 sales may overtake Toyota as world leader

Automotive News Europe
April 17, 2009 06:01 CET
UPDATED: 8:46 am U.S. ET

TOKYO/FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Volkswagen's global vehicle sales fell by 11.4 percent in the first quarter but its market share gains may have let it overtake Toyota Motor as the world's top-selling automaker.

Government incentives in key markets have fuelled demand for the German group's vehicles, limiting its sales decline even as the global market shrank by more than a fifth.

VW's first-quarter group sales of 1.39 million vehicles -- excluding truckmaker Scania but including VW trucks and buses for two months -- gave it a global market share of 11 percent, up from 9.7 percent a year earlier, it said in a statement.

Toyota has given no forecast for retail sales, but its latest estimate for shipments for the 2009 first quarter is 1.23 million vehicles, down 47 percent from a year earlier.

Volkswagen -- with its nine car and truck brands including Audi , Skoda, Seat and Scania -- has a goal of overtaking Toyota and General Motors to be the world's No.1 seller by 2018 -- a target that was initially met with skepticism.

But a deepening recession and credit crisis have hit demand in Toyota's top markets, with U.S. sales falling 38 percent and Japan sliding 24 percent in January-March.

VW strong in growth markets

Volkswagen, meanwhile, is benefiting from government stimulus plans for the car industry that have boosted sales in Germany, China and Brazil, which together accounted for 44 percent of group sales last year, making it more likely that it beat Toyota or at least came close.

In Germany, new registrations of Volkswagen group brands rose 19 percent in the first quarter to about 282,000. Toyota sales grew 43 percent but its market share is just 4.4 percent whereas about every third new car sold in Germany came from the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer.

"Volkswagen has the luck of being strong in the markets that are currently growing, while Toyota is exposed to those that are collapsing," said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the Centre for Automotive Research in Gelsenkirchen, adding the quarter's results would be "close."

Toyota, which significantly outsold every other manufacturer in 2008, has seen sales fall every month of this year in China, its third-biggest market. VW's group sales in China rose 6 percent in the first three months.

In the first quarter of last year, VW delivered 1.57 million vehicles, a third less than Toyota's 2.41 million, which included sales at minivehicle and truck units Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors.

Toyota's first-quarter U.S. sales fell 36 percent, while sales in Japan for the core Toyota brand plummeted 31 percent. The two markets account for just under half of Toyota's global sales.

Volkswagen has confirmed projections for a 10 percent fall in global sales in 2009.

"Volkswagen is a big competitor for Toyota," said Koji Endo, auto analyst at Credit Suisse in Tokyo. "Audi is strong, Volkswagen is strong, and they're making good use of their small cars."

Toyota first-quarter vehicle sales are due next week.

VW set to overtake GM

The battle for top spot is also likely to be intense in coming quarters.

Toyota is counting on a third-generation Prius hybrid car due for roll-out next month to jump-start sales as more countries offer consumers incentives to buy energy-efficient cars. It will launch 16 new models in Europe this year following a product drought in 2008.

Volkswagen, for its part, will have a full year of contribution from the remodelled Golf, a perennial best-seller, and the relaunch of its popular Polo compact car.

Volkswagen has also moved up in stock value ranking, grabbing the No.2 spot behind Toyota, whose market capitalisation of $133 billion still outstrips the German carmaker's $100 billion.

Market research company R.L. Polk Germany predicted this month that Volkswagen would overtake GM as the world's second-largest automaker as the U.S. giant suffers steep declines at home amid fears of bankruptcy.

Appears most VW prices have nudged up for 2010MY, but there's a new Jetta Sedan Wolfsburg available that looks to offer as much value as the previous ones. Only other way to get a 2.0T otherwise is in Highline trim.

2.0T, Sport Suspension, ESP, 17" Porto alloys, power sunroof, fogs, heated seats, 10 speaker 6-Disc touch screen MDI with iPod connectivity, leather wheel & shift knob. Does not have bi-Xenons.
Platinum Grey, black, Salsa Red, white.
6-Spd manual $27,275
6-Spd DSG $28,675

Sounds like good value to me. Far better than previous 2.0T offerings in the Jetta bodystyle.

The 2.0T Highline has been dropped by $3,000 but appears there are some content differences.

No Sport Package is offered, so no bi-Xenons on any.

Nothing yet. The US and Canada will be quite different in how they're packaged I think (have seen initial US VOGs which are posted online) similar to the differences with how they've gone to market differently with Jetta TDI. On the Golf I'd expect a Trendline/Comfortline, Highline, and Sportline, but that's not from any real info.

VWOC has already confirmed those first three trims for both the Golf and GTI, nothing about a Sportline for the Golf though.

I hope we get the Tech package in Canada.

Appears 2010MY Golf Wagon ordering has begun. Some changes in how it's packaged compared to the '09 Jetta Wagon - haven't looked in detail but along the lines of more expensive with less option choices.

It has the Golf VI front end and interior. In the US apparently will still be called Jetta SportWagen. Looks like Highline is dropped for the 2.5 and Trendline is dropped for the TDI. New touch-screen multimedia unit (non-NAVI) and they've cut the colour choices big time - all are pretty drab. Too bad, I liked the reds and Laser Blue. More might be released later.

Is the engine the same 2.5 powerplant in the Golf as in the Rabbit ? If so, does this mean we shouldn't have to worry too much about first year model issues ? I'm seriously thinking of getting a Golf early next year.

Pity. It would be a much better idea if they scrapped the 2.5 and offered the 1.4 duel charger, 2.0 turbo and the tdi only.  But this paranoia about premium gas does for that I guess.

How is it possible that after electricity has traveled through hundreds of miles of power line then hundreds of feet (or yards) of romex in our home, that changing the last three feet of wire with something exotic, expensive (cool looking, and packaged in a pricey box) is going to make a difference?

I don't understand why no HIDs except on the GTI.   Put another way... why shouldn't the Golf 5 door  Highline be identical to the GTi 5 door except for a) suspension settings and b) no TDI in the GTI and no 2.0t in the golf.
I'd buy a TDI highline that way but as it is I wonder how much to retro fit the HIDS into the golf. I'd bet that the wiring is probably identical

I also wonder why Golf wagon buyers are expected to want only dull semi-colours + black & white . Maybe no-body in NA  buys coloured cars any more?  I suppose one has to be grateful that they don't offer beige.
I'd like to see th GDM colour lists.
