Winter Alloys and Tires for 2007 GTI
« on: October 02, 2006, 04:59:31 pm »
Yet another thread  ::)

The GTI has a 5X112 bolt pattern.

Was looking at these 16" Namib VW Accessory alloys (top photo), but $382/pop Cdn  :o  Could import them from the US for less, but not enough less. Anyone have connections? I'd take any OEM VW 16" from a MkV except the biolines on the Jetta 2.5 and TDI which I don't care for on a Golf.

Can anyone identify these 16" BBS's? I would like to do a search on them. At under $200/wheel is more reasonable and think it would fit with the GTI well. Hard to tell in this perspective (looks substantial in the photo, but maybe teeny on the car) when not mounted on a vehicle in real life though.
What is the difference between 16x7 ET 42 or 16x6.5 ET 50  ??? Is one more specific to my car?

Are there any value priced alloys that anyone can think of? I prefer wheels like shown below, but would check out any suggestions. Also think a diamond black / dark carbon (but not pure black) finish would look great.

I'll be deciding whether to get alloys or steelies shortly, but since they'll be on the car 4-5 months of the year, thinking alloys. Will be shopping for winter tires (likely Michelins, but open to other lower priced options) next...

You don't want the 16"s on the 2.5 and TDI luxury packages?

But...but...steelies in winter on a car than comes with alloys is so damn...Canadian!  To me, it screams, "Yeah, I could be all pimped out with alloys, but instead I'll settle for more traction than you."

No, I don't like the Jetta's bioline double-spoke 16"ers on a Golf. Love the 2.0T's 17"ers, but they'd get pitted fast with all those spokes and such without applying silicon, washing, etc. Too much maintenance.

I'm trying some VW forums as well, but don't think I'll find much. The BBS's were an option presented on VWVortex that I'm considering - would just like to know what model of wheel it is.

I like the wheel covers on Audis, BMWs, Benzes, etc - simple yet elegant solution. Last year was the first year I put snows on and opted for 16" steelies with wheel covers from a New Beetle. Looked alright, but much prefer the alloys if I could find something at decent cost.

I know what you mean about using alloys for winter rims.
Last year I was able to find used 17"alloys for a hundred each, steelies for BMW run about 90 new plus taxes
Last you after December I do not think I used the snowblower at all.
And where you are it is a bit warmer then Cobourg
What size are you looking for?

Didn't the previous generation Passat use the 5x112 bolt pattern also?   Any choice of those wheels?

Nope the new Mark V has a high offset and none of the older gen VW or Audi fitments will work. The wheel has to be a minimum +45 to avoid sticking out past the fender. There are options that include steel and alloy available. Just depends on form or function. We all have different taste. Some like the black steels because they are cheaper and easier to maintain. Others cant bare to put black steel wheels on their vehcile and opt for something a little more pleasing to the eye. Dollar be damned.

16" is the smalles you can go...

Some guy is selling take offs of mkV jettas  (the 16 inch alloys) for 400 a set.  That is a steal, you should consider this if he still has a set left !

EDIT:  I didn't read your message and I see you don't want these  hahah I'll leave the post here if anyone else is interested.

AMI in Barrie is selling those Jetta alloys and also has this BBS 'RDW' for $200.
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/DisplayWheel.jsp?wheelMake=BBS&wheelModel=RDW&wheelFinish=Silver+Painted

I was looking for a carbon/diamond black wheel, but really like this one. I'm under the impression it'll fit on my GTI.

Morty, do you have any info on this wheel (quality, price) or could you source it? I've been looking at your Winter tires online and if I could get the two as a package it'd be ideal depending on the cost. Or is $200 per wheel decent? Just looking for info at present.

These are kind of neat too but think the BBS' would fit the car better http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/DisplayWheel.jsp?wheelMake=O.Z.&wheelModel=5-Star&wheelFinish=Silver+Painted

Just spoke with BBS in the US and was referred to their Canadian re-distributor of alloys - hoping to 'work something out' price-wise. If so, will be a happy man. Apparently the alloys are held-up by BBS in Germany but should be arriving in 2-3 weeks. There's only 1 example of the wheel and I've been offered a look-see, which I may take him up on - perhaps Friday before the GTG. Nice gent.

Been reading and understanding I should get a performance snow.

So, considering in order:

Hankook W300
Kumho KW17
Michelin PA2
Pirelli 210 Sottozero - someone has a set of these new on steelies with wheel covers for $800 on Craigslist

Since I figure they're all good tires for the application, any idea which one is known to wear best/have the longest tread life?

Yeah, no need to remind me. Geez. Crazy winter tire swap season at the first sign of flurries  :fall:

Just realized the guy selling the Pirelli's bought them for his TT Roadster. Since it's a MkIV-based Audi, don't think it'll fit the MkV VW even though the tire size is the same. What's with this 'offset' BS talk anyway? hehe  Morty, of the ET 42 and ET 50 alloy, I would need the ET 50 then for my offset?

Someone on Vortex has 10 spoke Jetta 2.0T alloys with 650Mi on them.

Our Cdn 2.0T models are almost all equipped like this...
http://www.volkswatch.com/roadtests/jetta20t/jetta20tfront.jpg
I would LOVE those wheels for the right price. Think they're great.

The base Jetta 2.0T wheel I think is this one in this CD article, also 10 spoke (it's a Cdn article with photos of a US-spec car)...
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jm/06jetta_dsg.htm I have yet to see one on the Jetta, so maybe that's just in the US or dealers don't order them without roofs so there's next to none around. I'm a little less keen on them, but they still look pretty decent IMO.

Awaiting back word on which he has, condition, and price.

Just realized our nifty 2.0T's in the first link are 17"ers. The latter 16"ers. Still, would be nice. I see a photo of his car and am still interested in the alloys. We'll see. At this late in the game between those and the BBS RDW's.

Saw the BBS RDW today. Love them.

Unfortunately, 'sold out' or BBS is not shipping them. Apparently they're selling well in Europe and BBS has severely restricted and/or backed out of North American orders. Sounds typical of Euro firms with the exchange and such lately  ::)  Will check back later next week.
