UmroAyyar's Toyotas
« on: October 02, 2006, 09:37:37 am »
This is the outgoing 2002 Toyota Corolla CE. Bought this CPO in 2004 with 52,000km on it. Perfect for a starter vehicle, very easy to handle, maneuver, enough room for two adults and two children with their assortment of seats and the mega stroller. Served me very well, had the first iteration of Toyota's VVTi which got a whole lot better in 2003 model year. Very stark difference in driveability of 2002 and 2003+ Corollas.

This car suffered the utmost in the urban jungle parking lots, with door dings, keyed-on, scarped, broken into twice. Major reason to get rid of it as the cost of fixing those cosmetic damages was creeping up before it started to show rust at damaged surfaces.

This is the damage to the vehicle, some pictures, its a lot more. The total cost would have been atleast $2000. Basically the all the panels on driver side have to be repainted. The damage under the front door handles incensed me the most, started to show rust.

Rear cupholder(it pops out from behind the centre console) was broken by a drop kick when my son was a 18 months old. Cost $57.

Battery might have to be changed etc. I still got a fair trade-in value out of it though. From a low of $7200 to a high of $9500. I got it valued at $8,000.

I don't see much damage at all, much less 2K worth.

Question though, what in the hell is on the steering wheel?
Internal combustion thrust I trust

This however, is a gorgeous looking car, Inside and Outside. I always find myself looking back at it.

Its 2007 Toyota Camry LE Base. Even at a base level, standard equipment is mind boggling.
Excellent Crash safety all around, full assortment of airbags for front and rear passengers, driver's knee airbag. Brakes are Power Assisted, EBD, Brake Assist(BA), ABS, ventillated dics all around. Did I mention Full Size Spare tire?
Excellent 160Watt audio system with 6 speakers,The System features ASL [Automatic Sound Levelizer] that automatically controls volume in relation to vehicle speed, plays MP3/WMA with Auxiliary input, steering wheel controls for stereo.
Driver's seat manual height adjustment. Tilt and Telescoping steering wheel (a big plus for us).
There are so many small storage areas around the car, centre console, under the arm rest, in the dash, above the rear view mirror.
Very very roomy inside even for rear passengers. Extremely quiet vehicle at highway speeds even with strong winds the previous weekend.
This car drives very well, very quietly, the throttle is electronic control, not cable attached so its very responsive, brakes are discs all around and are very strong as well. I drove around on the streets for few minutes to get the feel for it. It has ABS and quiet heavier than the Corolla so I need to anticipate braking a bit earlier to avoid nose dives (had a feeling of those while testing). In downtown traffic you're more on edge than the highway at times.
Here is the first assortment of pictures, hurriedly taken this morning at work. More to follow when I get this tinted and after a few more cosmetic changes.

I don't see much damage at all, much less 2K worth.

Question though, what in the hell is on the steering wheel?

I didn't take pictures of all the damage, its not very extensive, but to fix the keyed area (deep to the primer and metal)  on all the driver side panels, scraped bumpers (plastic showing). Numerous door dings and long scrapes on all doors. If everything had to be fixed, it would range from $1200 to $2000 depending on the shop. If I were selling privately, I wouldn't fix all of that though, just anticipated the cost in order to justify to get into a newer car.  ;D

Oh that thing on the steering wheel, my hands sweat a lot, makes the steering wheel slippery, scared me few times so I did that despicable thing.  :bang:  Please look away.......

Lovely car, and great choice of colour, Umro!  I always find myself admiring them on the road.  Sounds like you're quite happy with your purchase.

My only question (and you may have already explained it somewhere else):  how did you go from wanting a newer Corolla to getting a brand-new Camry?

Nice rides Cookie. I wonder how the Camry will look in its début for the Daytona 500.

This car is not brand new, but almost new has 20,000km on it, returned from a company lease, highway driven. I paid $23,995 for this car and I did not ask for a discount on the price but asked the business manager to supplement it with something as I did when I bought the Corolla.
I got Toyota's new vehicle extended warranty for free upto 48months/100,000km costs $1000. I hate Toyota's all-season mats, they're too slippery and won't contain snow/slush very well in winter, I'll return them and get a cargo liner for the trunk instead.
I also got their top of the line Toyota Touch Gold service X 2. They'll wash/wax/shampoo the whole car all around costs $400 in total.
I also get the next four scheduled maintenance services for free. approx cost $300.

Excluding the supplemental discounts which are approx $1700. A brand new car of the same spec would cost me atleast $4100 more out of my pocket. So for a 6 month old car $4100+$1700 = $5800 is not a bad discount. All of this was done in good faith, very friendly, no pressure environment, it worked for me before at Toyota, worked again much much better this time. I didn't ask them to reduce the price of the car at all.

Well, I made spreadsheets with different choices from 2006 used Corollas to new 2007 Corolla SE packages, 2006 Matrix and I took them with me after my first encounter with the Toyota business manager in light of the options he offered me. I actually went there to get an estimate from their bodyshop to fix the car, he saw me there and asked me about the whole situation and me few offers.

He offered me a 2006 Corolla with 20,000km on it for a very suitable amount, I had negative equity in my old Corolla, he offered to take care of it. I went home made spreadsheets and then I started comparing Corolla, Matrix. I went back with all that information and then he gave me the keys to drive a Camry and RAV4 on my own. We did that with my wife and my son. After sitting in the Camry we didn't want anything else. RAV4 was a hoot to drive, but I am leary of it because it has poor rear crash test rating, otherwise exellent vehicle. Camry has the best available standard equipment in the base level. I turn down the the Base Camry with B Package, which adds power driver seat and alloys for $1200 more. Mine is totally base with excellent standard equipment.

Wow, nice Camry.

I thought you were still after a newer Crayola as well. That Camry looks great tho - I like that colour on it too. TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT - don't want to see any door or bumper dings when you bring it to the GTG ;)

All hail BIG HURRAY for graduating from the Salmon Beige 'Sandrift Metallic' Corolla!!!

All joking aside, congrats!

Great car!  I like the new Camry, and as others have said, you got a great colour.  It will surely give you years of trouble-free service.

Umro - very sharp looking Camry LE. Like the color and your choice, makes a lot of sense. The new Camry is a well styled car IMO. Enjoy your new ride.
