Winter Tires for 06 Civic mainly highway
« on: September 25, 2006, 01:07:42 pm »
Hi All,

I'm searching for a set of winter tires for my 06 Civic. I drive 220km everyday so tire wear is a main concern for me. I'd like to have something that last a bit longer. I live in Toronto area and we don't get a lot of snow throughout the winter. I've Michelin X-ice and Pirelli Wintercarving in mind, but I'd like to obtain some more opinion from other people. Any recommendation?

Those Nokian WR that people seem to like for year-round use might be a good choice for your long, mostly bare road commute.

Possibly the H-rated Hankook IceBear W300.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

My Nokians were still in great shape after three winters, until they got stolen along with the car, anyway ;)

For tire wear, then, I'd suggest the newer Nokian Hakka 2.  The Bridgestone Blizzak have not been the best wearing tire, though I understand they are trying to change that.  No idea on the wear qualities of the X-Ice.

I've heard many good reviews about Nokian winter tires and I'd love to try them. The thing that holds me back is that I want something more mainstream with lots of supply. The reason being that last winter with my previous car, I put on a set of Kumho KW17, which is a great winter tires and I like a lot. Then one evening after work while I was driving home on the highway, I got a puncture. The puncture was pretty bad that it couldn't be repaired. Then came the difficult part of locating a replacement tire as most places ran out of this KW17. I was lucky that my local tire store was able to locate one for me after some searching, but it's enough of a hassle that I wouldn't want to go through again in case something like this happens again.

Nokian Hakka's wear better than any other winter I, or anyone I know, has driven on.

With regards to supplies of them should damage be unrepariable, most winter tires are sold out by January anyways, so really it does not matter much which brand one choses, from that perspective.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

I think you might run into this problem with any winter tires.  Most places the sells them seems to run out of stock by late November early december (I could be wrong on this).

Sounds like you want to go with a performance type winter tire. H-Rated would be the most likely and the W300 is among a lot of really good options. Here is a link for a number of tires, but focus on the H or V-rated:

TireTrends - 2006 Honda 16" Winter Tires

Good options from the list inlcude:

Hankook W300
Kumho KW17
Bridgestone Blizzak LM25
Michelin PA2
Dunlop Winter Sport 3D

Anyone here has experience/feedback/comment regarding Pirelli's winter 210 Sottozero? Seems like this one is relatively new and it also fall into this performance winter catagory.
