Good FOR YOU....Huh? standing by yer "VAN".........butt -re-uttal..is so HARD TO TAKE....your SOLD...MOST are NOT..because it's a HARD SELL.........can U not see that..Oh I'm in the Vanguard of (WHAT EXACTLY!!!???) step back a few paces ...at least on the CAR issue and see..the FIRST steps are always (mostly!!?) WRONG it may take  a while and I buy Hybrid Diesel for the next 10 years..PROVE ME WRONG.........all the BS about ...Parairie Grasses(aka ethanol 85%) and Solar panels  and somesuch are 60 Minute FANTASIES by NEW YORKERS in TV RATINGS RACES.....NOT real Manufacturers....sure the Big 5 wanna "play NICE" and produce "HYBRIDS" for nefarious reasons....lowering their
Gov CAFE  Requirements.....and YET they produce GUZZLER HYBRIDS   (RX3ooH's and Accords) for REAL i.e Todays MARKET (or they would DIE.. to the Chinese,Koreanss etc..who would prouduce Gas un guzzlers as in Canada NOT USA!!!) for real buyers.
    So suck it up buttercup...sorry ya lost the $2K ya must be smitten........to spend $4K extra fer WHAT!!!!?Huh

Hybrids are a novel way to lower emissions and fuel consumption, most notably for commuters often stuck in traffic. Not so beneficial in rural or all highway conditions, but nevertheless a green machine. Consumers seem to like them, they're thought highly of, have thus far proven reliable for the most part, and pricing is getting more affordable and comparable. It's been shown in North America (surprisinging, not as big sellers in Japan) hybrids are a viable player in the market and stupendous at enhancing corporate image.

Actually my wife's Civic Hybrid is driven mainly in the city with traffic and stop-n-go situations.  My Civic Hybrid is driven in rural and highway conditions.  The only other diference is the colour of the cars and maybe I drive a little more agressively, both with around 18,000 km currently show a lifetime MPG almost identical of around 50 MPG.

The only situations were I see our MPG really affected is if we drive over 120 km/hour for a long stretch ; also in really bad stop and go traffic, the kind where you have to wait for more than one cycle on a traffic lights.  Prolonged uphills or short trips are also bad for performance.   
I am pretty sure any vehicle would be negatively affected in those situations.

Yes, I believe as you say any vehicle is affected by those situations.

My point was that there is less difference on the highway with the hybrid vs a traditional fuel efficient 4-cyl costing significantly less or diesel. The TDI I had was rated at 50 city / 64 highway, and I often got more than 1,000kms out of the 55L tank no matter in what conditions I drove it (including 130km/h) so long as not complete stop and go. I'd say like you the real world was close to the rating. But in city driving, the engine stop mode, or in the Prius's case, the ability to drive forward at lower speeds using only electric power producing zero emissions, really is the environmental benefit.

No matter how you slice it, the Civic and Prius Hybrids are green: great on gas, lower emissions.

                        Who buys them...well ONLY comfortably off folk that can afford ans extra few thou for a limited choice of vehicle..and enjoy the FEEL GOOD FACTOR more than the car or it's performance the Prius is rated as a dog in handling etc.........

I didn't understand it either.  Smiley Then I bought the 2007 Camry, it stereo plays MP3s more songs in one CD. Then I hooked up more music collection using the Aux Input. Sold. I can play my chosen playlist instead of all songs one by one. For some its freedom to choose any song from their huge collections to play any time they want. (I'm not there yet). But for some its important.

The AUX connector and MP3 playing ability in the Civic are nice, but they are easy to get from any $100+ after-market audio system, some units even have USB or PCMCIA connectors.    They are no big deal.   
On the other hand the ability to change songs, control the volume or switch folders from the steering wheel cannot be added after-market (not easily).   

What really sold me in the car initially was the Hybrid related features.   Long term I hope that the brakes, electrical system and other mechanical features that are "assisted" by the electrical motor will make the car last longer than a regular Civic.

I understand that I am taking a chance with the new technology, and not everyone is willing to do it.   I respect that Cool

I'd say this thread is pretty illustrative that those buying hybrids do so as much as anything, to make a statement.  If you like it's a revolt against the conspicuous consumption surrounding us.  One reality that Canadian (& US) drivers had better get around to realizing is that they are all polluters and that the polluter pays principle will come into effect sooner or later, as it has in other jurisdictions.  However, as yet we live in lahlah land.  Where else can you emit 10 tonnes of CO2/yr with little or no penalty other than the cost of (cheap) fuel when you could accomplish the same emitting a third to a quarter less? 

But I digress, it is perhaps worth mentioning that hybrid technology is still quite new.  If to get the best out of it, you need to modify your driving style, are you surprised?  No doubt those transitioning from a horse and buggy to a horseless carriage, way back when, also had to change their driving style!  The day will come when changing your driving style will be the least of your worries.  Rather it'll be drive or don't drive.

I'd like to add driving style too. I had a chance to drive a Jetta TDI PD running on B10 fuel. I did see 5.6L/100km on the Avg Fuel Consumption meter in the trip computer. My worst is 7L/100km.

I did a 3 short resets of ~5 mins each in different terrains. I realise it's waay too short to give a good reading but using the same techniques as I did in the Prius, the average is ~6.4L/100km which isn't too bad given it isn't a hybrid.
