07 Santa Fe
« on: September 17, 2006, 03:03:31 pm »
I recently bought a new 07 Santa Fe (haven't picked up the car yet) and was surprised when my dealership was offering a kill switch for it.  Maybe I'm crazy but doesn't the car come with a keyless entry with alarm and an ignition immobilization system (kill switch) as it states on Hyundai's web site. Can anyone elaborate on this or should I ignore the dealership. They want to charge me $199.95 for something I am supposed to have on my car preinstalled.  I already forwarded an email to Hyundai Canada about this very same issue.   ???

They are offering and you can decline.  No biggie.  The dealer cannot force you to take it as part of the package.  I offer many after sale products from extended warranty to life and disability products, but there is no gun to the head.

Edit:  Let me add, the latest on immobilizers and auto theft is that the theives are pretty darn smart, many now carry lap tops that plug into the OBD port to bypass the computer.  The more defenses you have, the smarter the theives get.  A kill switch may be redundant, but redundancy may save your vehicle if it is in demand or in a questionable area.

What does this 'kill switch' do?  How does it integrate into the factory system?  How does it work?

They usually are a secondary ignition switch that needs to be set.  I've seen various itterations, we don't install/sell them here, but many of our trades have had them.  Have to press the fog light button first, or such things.

Sounds neat.  Kinda like a start sequence before you launch the space shuttle?  ;)   ;D

If I lived in one of the “Big Cities” I would have a DIY kill switch similar to a snowmobile. Thieves would adjust their tactics to mass produced systems but would give up quickly if they encounter a home made system IMHO.

Meh, if thieves decide they want my car; take it and load it on a container bound for over-seas destinations, they can have it.  Then I get a new one with fewer kms and no stonechips.  :)

Agreed, I have "replacement insurance" on all 3 vehicles, if stolen or totalled, I get a new one of the same kind/model and of the then current year. That's what insurance is for. Admittedly, mods are not covered.
