I think if it had approriate trunk space it would be on the same level as the Miata, in terms of a sales success.

They're selling them faster than they can make them.  How's that for sales success?

Other cars bungle details too.  As a music lover, I think it's a travesty that CD jewelcases don't fit into an E90 3-series' center console.  And the rear seat in an FJ cruiser is a JOKE, as are the windows that don't roll down.  Despite the fact that their competitors don't have these issues, neither of these cars are considered worthless because of these practicality issues.  I don't see the Kappa twin's lack of trunk space to be any different, even if the Miata has a better trunk.

Actually, I do think the new FJ is a complete travesty.  It's a total style over substance exercise.

:iagree: and unfortunately, they are selling very well here in PA. It must be due to the fact that Toyota is the only "non-domestic" brand sold here.

How is the FJ a complete travesty?  ???

It was designed for one main purpose, off-roading. It beats the XTerra according to Edmunds. Are the rear seats on a TJ that much better? Is the TJ, the ultimate off-road icon, a complete travesty too?

This is good news, but it's not going to make me run out and buy one.

I don't even care that much that the car is heavier than the MX-5, as it has aleady proven itself among the world's press with its capabilities. The turbo should be a hoot. Certainly the lack of any sort of usable carry space is something that is still unforgiveable for a daily use road car which would mean my cheque would be for Mazda.

All this means to me is that it might speed up Mazda's potential introduction of a Mazdaspeed version of the MX-5 for sooner....I'll take mine with the folding hardtop please. GM's aggressive price will keep the MX-5's price in check for future years.

Speaking of sales successes, the Solstice out-sold the Miata in the United States for the 2006 model year.  It was in either Motor Trend or Car & Driver--can't remember which (both are on my coffee table right now).  If anyone wants, I could look up the exact cite, but I definitely remember reading that.

And the Solstice GXP handily beat both the 350Z roadster and the BMW Z4 3.0si in a Motor Trend shootout.  Not bad, considering it was the cheapest there (and 60% of the price of the Bimmer).

Not really surprising since the GM's are new and fresh, and way more stylish than the all-too-familiar looking MX-5. The MX-5's styling is an evolution from an essentially 16 year design.

The Solstice's sales were better in the US market only I believe.  In Canada, I thought I read earlier this year that the MX5 was outselling it.  Plus, the MX5 is a global car... internationally far more MX5s were sold than Solstices.   Not that this has any relevance to the rest of the discussion... just sayin's all.  ;)

A Dodge SRT4 will handily beat a 330i in many respects too... doesn't mean I'd choose one over the Bimmer.

I remember a Saturn ad for the ION redline and the driver of the ION said "sure I could have bought a BMW Z3, but I'd be going slower and would have paid 3x as much for the car!" Almost fell outta my chair laughing...
