2007 Jaguar XKR

2007 Jaguar XKRThe new supercharged Jaguar XKR offers 420 horsepower, 120 more than the regular XK, reports Peter Bleakney. "As the all-aluminum XKR coupe weighs only 70 kg more than the base coupe, the power-to-weight ratio is 34% higher," he says.  Jaguar claims the XKR coupe scampers to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, he reports.      More...

Hopefully XKR really *does* handle well. Cause both new XK8 and previous version's handling dynamics felt underwhelming. Its driving feel and sharpness are no way close to 911. I was Roll Eyes Roll Eyes after driven new XK8 when read Jag called 911 a "touring car" and XK8 "sports car".

NOT a sports car.  A good GT car sure....but to try and go after the sharpness of a 911?  Out of your mind.  The V8 Vantage from AM does a good job at aiming for the 911...but it's significantly smaller than this boat.  This thing is long, and fairly heavy when you put it side by side with the Porsche.

Looks very good, baby AM like but I've always disliked those front lights...not that it matters, I'm not in this target market.  Too little moolah.

Of course it won't have the sharpness of a 911 (not to mention a Cayman S).  But what a car to be seen in.  And then comes the question...of people who spend $100,000+ on a car, what percentage buy them to go to the track, and what portion buy them to be seen in them?  This car should be a fantastic success, by my reckoning.

I'm not saying Porsche is exactly going to be bankrupt--they'll always have prestige, name recognition, and a healthy clientele who want the bragging rights of owning the best-handling car ever (whether or not they actually ever push its limits)...but this Jag sure has a winning combination too.

I know paddle shifters are in these days, but no manual transmission = no Bullet Blue  Embarrassed... Or more accurately, No money for an XKR = no Bullet Blue   Cry

I've seen one coming at me from a two laned highway before, and I must admit, I mistaked it for an Aston Martin from far away. And I got really excited. But then I realized it was the new Jag. And my excitement was reduced to mild excitement.  Wink

That said, it is vastly improved over the old XKR.

I love the XKR, I think this car is just great looking.  To those that say it can't drive like a 911, it really doesn't make a difference at all, no one that buys these are going to blast it away on the track, it's a classy ride to go out on the town in, yum yum, give me one please

Typical GT car.  Nothing wrong with that....but it is what it is.  A blvd cruiser to be seen in that can't double as a good track car.

On its own merits out on the highways and byways, the new XK is an impressive looking machine.  However, as I've stated before on the forum, when viewing both a V8 Vantage and XK within a few moments of each other (as we did at this year's AutoShow), the XK just looks big and awkward -- especially the nose which seems too high and with overly-styled headlights.  In fairness, the V8 Vantage is pretty damned close to visual automotive nirvana to my eyes and by comparison, even some of the most beautiful of machines will seem like the 'ugly sister' by comparison.

I'm not really too sure what the point of that article on the XKR was though.  We've already heard/ read about the XK so we know about its styling and interior bits... we can read about the upgraded features in Jag's own literature, so what the hell is the point in wasting bandwidth on an article that can't even tell us what it's like to drive?
