Has anyone actually driven a Corolla XRS?  A somewhat sporty, sleeper sedan with Toyota reliability (and a six speed stick ) actually sounds quite attractive.  Hell, with some basic (or not so basic) mods, you could probably build a pretty potent econobox..

Corollas seem overrepresented in the Drive below The Speed Limit In The Left Lane Club and their countryside chapter.. "drive at 60 when there is a double yellow line but speed up to 90 when there is a dotted line"

But One of my colleagues has 3 of them between 1978 and the present and none of them ever let him down... although the earlier ones did rust.

I have a 2002 and I like it. Its more comfort oriented than being sporty. Certainly a huge number of people want that.

TRD has performance mods for 2003+ Corolla. A supercharger for the 2005 (drive by wire throttle) was in the works from TRD IIRC.

But thats all people want....nothing more, nothing less. Also Quality with Toyota has in abundance. 

Pitty the Domestic can't every seamed to get that for the last I don't know how may years.

Maybe that's all YOU want, but certain people like a bit of fun and sportiness and style in their car.  These crazy people are what I like to call "driving enthusiasts."  Just to warn you, they tend to dominate internet car forums like this one, and they sometimes get cranky if you argue that only practicality, not passion, matters when it comes to designing cars.

I realize that driving enthusiasts are a definite minority when it comes to the economics of making a profitable car company, but come on, you're in the lion's den.  At least here, the opinions of enthusiasts matter.
