Yaris sedan deal... does this sound good?
« on: August 09, 2006, 12:19:32 pm »
I posted this in another thread, but I thought it might get lost in there and it should deserve it's own thread.  ;D

I have a potential deal to trade in my 2003 Protege5 Auto with 60K on it, for a 2007 Yaris Sedan 5spd with the C package (A/C, power group, ABS, etc) for a total difference of $3K after taxes and the grad rebate I am eligible for.  The main reason I want the Yaris is for the fuel economy... it's uses about 3L/100km less than my P5.

Thoughts on this deal?  I think it's pretty good compared to other offers I've had.

3 grand buys a lot of fuel.   Personally, I would not do it on fuel economy alone, I don't think the econimics would be in your favor, especially considering your modest per year mileage.

If you are fond of the looks of the Yaris, as I am, and want/need a new car that's another story.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

I gave you my answer in that other thread.

I just did some fuel numbers yesterday. If I got a fuel efficient Yaris when I bought my CR-V in 1999 (yes I know, the Yaris wasn't available back then in NA), I would have saved 3875 liters of fuel or 554 liter per year. Aat todays prices, about $600 more a year to run my CR-V. It isn't worth it to trade my vehicle in to save $600 a year.

If you want a sedan, why not look at a Corolla? More room and it gets the same gas mileage. Probably better resale as well.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

If the Yaris did save you 3l/100km (not likley given varied driving conditions etc) it would save about 700$ a year

I would take 4 years of driving to recoup the 3k you spent on "upgrading" to the Yaris

Thanks for the tips guys.  Yeah, I did some more thinking and it doesn't make sense for me to trade in the P5 for the Yaris... I think I already knew this, but the thought of a new car always seems to get me  ;D

Thanks again for the advice.

This is the pickle for many of us that don't drive monster SUVs.  It's easy to make it work if you you're moving from something that glugs 17-20L/100km to 6-7.  But, for those of us operating at 10L/100km or so, it's tough to justify a Yaris/Civic/etc.

My C230 gets 10L/10km in all-city driving and can actually get into the mid to low 6's on the highway.  Sure, a Yaris is better, but since my C230 is now nearly nine years old, the price gap between my "old" Mercedes and the new car means I have to drive the Yaris until I retire to make the payback.

But, the Yaris is under warranty so I'd have lower maintenance/repair costs, right?  Well, sure, but not by much.  The Mercedes, despite it's 200K, is pretty much like new and takes little $$ to keep it that way.  The depreciation on the Yaris is small, but still more than the MB at this stage in it's life.

So, after sitting down and really hammering it out, the Yaris (yeah, we were thinking about getting a new Yaris and selling the C230) just didn't make financial sense.  It would have to be a "'cause I want it" decision, not because we'd actually save any money.

Now, my neighbour who drives his big ute literally from one end of the city to the other on his daily commute?  I figured out he could KEEP the big ute and by leasing a new Yaris (and a well equipped one) the gas savings would MORE than make the lease payment and monthly insurance bill.
No place I'd rather be...

You're got a great car with that Mercedes. You save a ton of money, as you don't need to make monthly payments and the one you have is reliable and not costly to maintain.

The deal itself sounds reasonable.  If you were doing it for just fuel economy, it wouldn't be worth it.  You have to consider that the Pro is getting to that age where you will need to start putting some money into it.  Its getting about time do the brakes, tires and exhaust within 18 months.  With the Yaris you get to start new all over again.

I was thinking that too. If you like the Yaris and the cost to make the jump is manageable, might be a wise move.
