Thx for replies and explanation. I admit I was shocked to see a price with 5k over MSRP for a car in this pricing category... Its a 2008 Lancer GTS. Heh... a true comment about sanity - no way I gonna pay that kind of price for this vehicle...

  Dealer can keep it.  If that's the way they want to play, maybe Mitsu won't be around forever.

Wait a year and you can probably get a couple thousand off the MSRP

Unfortunately, I need a second vehicle within a month or so. I guess I'll have to pick something else. The ES model (which is considered to be the best value in this line-up) goes for MSRP and even less than that. I could settle for an ES but my wife loved the way that GTS looked like. Still no chance I gonna pay 5k over MSRP and 7k over ES price for 18' weels and a spoiler...

To me $28K for a $24K vehicle sounds like an "all in" price - freight & pdi, taxes etc and not necessarily the dealer inflating the price.

It must be the OTD price based on the MSRP. You could certainly do better. Get the CarCostCanada report and I believe there is dealer listed there (if you are in Toronto area at least). You should be able to negociate the price from the invoice up. I know the 2008 Lancer GTS is in short supply at the moment, but I cannot imagin a dealer asking 5K over the MSRP on this car. It must be a misunderstanding.

5K in fees and taxes?  On a $24k car, taxes come to only 6% (Alberta) $25,540.  $4k in fees?  Yeah....keep it.

Totally makes sense in Ontario but not in Alberta!

The official website pricing is "Total Selling Price 24,293.00"
including Destination Charge $1,245.00 and Pre-Delivery Inspection $250.00. I assume only GST is extra.

There was no misunderstanding - I've asked the dealer 3 times and even pointed out at MSRP price, etc. As I said - I was shocked, so I made it crystal clear for myself that he wants 5k on top of MSRP before we left the dealership. My wife was there too (shocked by the price as well).

By the way, I already have another price quote for this vehicle which is (at this early stage  ;) ) equal to MSRP. It sucks to have to purchase in another city but for 5k I'll do it in heartbeat.

Make sure the dealer did not include the "Sun&Sound" option for $2,000. In this case, the price would climb up to $27,976.58 with 6% GST and A/c tax which is Federal ($100). Including dealer admin fee (if any), license etc it could reach or go over $28K.

Go line by line with the salesman, having done your home work. In my experience most of them don't know squat about the cars they are selling, options, prices, etc

I did. We discussed all the specs and he knew I did not need sun & sound package. Anyway... I've already checked the other dealers in the city and I'm getting realistic prices (MSRP plus tax) just by talking with them on the phone. I guess that was just another lesson for me as a consumer - do your homework, check alternative vendors/service providers, etc. I'll post the final results here in case we decide to proceed with this particular model. And hopefully, some pictures!  ;)

Thx everyone for the input!

Good.  Hope that dealer sucks it up and comes back down to reality.  It'd be different if he was in possession of something rare and sought after, like a Ferrari Enzo....but somebody has to slap him upside the head and tell him it's a Lancer....they're going to make more of them.

Weird, when I went to testdrive a Lancer with my girlfriend way back, we made it very clear that the ES was the model she was looking at. The salesman nonetheless kept talking about the GTS with the Sun & Sound, tacked on a $750 admin fee, and then smiled broadly and said "Look at that! You can drive away in this car for just $30000!"

I think I died a little bit inside.

$750 admin fee?

Have you tried CCC to get a better price, with hopefully a little less stealership fee?

...tacked on a $750 admin fee

Damn....just because I don't want that dealer to get the sale, I'm willing to offer you the CCC report.  PM me if you want it and I'll pull it for you.  $5k markup on the Lancer GTS....it's laughable.

The car was out of the running right after the test drive, and she was still a month or two away from buying at that time.

Hypothetically? Well its moot. Quoting me a price for a trim level with options that I don't want is bad enough, but $750 admin fee is when I just laugh and walk away.

If I ever pay MSRP for a car, its probably only because it says Porsche on it somewhere.

MD: Read my post :P My girlfriend has a blue Civic, I got about $1300 off sticker all said and done, only other fees were license plates, tax, etc.
