Nice to see such an article on such an arcane vehicle, but one important piece of info was missing.  The last Trabbis produced were powered by 4-stroke 1.1l VW Polo engines.  The were also available in the three body styles.

BTW - the Trabbi "Jeep" was callled the Tramp.

I loved to see the Trabi in the Classic Cars section. I have fond memories of my father's first car, a white Trabant, when I was about 4. The car had only one lock, in the driver's door, and when that broke I had to crawl in through the trunk and open the doors from the inside. I had to sit always behind the driver because the front seats' backrests could not be locked in place. At a sudden brake the passenger seat's backrest would just fold forward (if the seat was empty) and could turn into a launching ramp for me.

However the article, just like the report on Top Gear a few years ago, misses one point: the Trabant was a wonderful piece of automotive Darwinism, perfectly adapted to its environment. Its simple construction made it able to survive on the rural roads of Eastern Europe, it was easy to repair and cheap enough to produce so people could afford it. It survived without change as long as its environment remained unchanged - and sadly it was unable to adapt and dissapeared afterwards. I saw some of the early '90s Trabants, equipped with VW Polo 4-stroke engines - poor creatures!

The VW Polo were the best.......I think.....At least you could go a few miles in it.....I have the model of berlin wall and tiny trabant inside...... kicking around here somewhere, been a whlie since I've seen it, come to think of it........
