CD Article: 2006 Ariel Atom

First Drive:
2006 Ariel Atom

2006 Ariel Atom"There's fast, and then there's Atom fast," says Laurance Yap.  Weighing just 450 kilograms, the 300-hp supercharged Ariel Atom will reach 100 km/h in just over three seconds, he reports. "But what was most impressive was the braking," he says. "You always end up slowed down way before you actually need to be." The Atom is not yet road-legal in Canada, but it's in the works, he says.      More...

How do you make an Elise/Exige feel like a Cadillac barge?  How does one make a Caterham feel big?  How to laugh at the million dollar exotic performance stats?

What a coincidence. I was at a track day in Seattle Raceway, drooling over an Atom with S2k motor, on a hot Washington Monday.

Hopefully they can make them street legal up here - I'd save my pennies for this car!

Acceleration, handling, braking, engine noise, and sensory feedback from the road and nothing else. Just the basic elements of driving in their purist form.

I want one.
To err is human, to blame it on someone else is even more human.

I'd dump the S2000 in a heartbeat for this car.

Since I only drive the S2000 for auto-x now for the most part, this would be a killer guaranteed 1st place car :)

Track fine. Road??? you gotta be kiddin. 100 km. in the rain...or snow...or slush.
Get a great view of the exhaust pipes of the pick-up trucks on steroids. There's
nothing greatly cleaver in putting high HP in a basic frame, it's been done for years.
I am with Saffi on this one.

I'm just mad that they went with a GM Ecotec engine here in NA, over the Civic Type-R 200hp K-series engine that the Atom gets everywhere else.  Boooooo.

But, saving my pennies... this is a very fast little machine.

I’m surprised they didn’t stick with the Honda engine?

Nice ride, I’d love to have it.  Although it’s a tad expensive, no?

Yeah, something tells me a smooth, high-revving 4-cyl with a really musical wail would be so fitting for this junior F1 car.  A Mazda Renesis Rotary would also be a neat choice for this machine.  What a barrel of monkey's that thing would be to drive.

A saw one something VERY similar to this on the QEW west 2 week-ends ago in Oakville. Anybody have any ideas on what looks near identical but has a little wing on the back of it of naked alloy?

Probably somewhat a function of age, but also of preference, as I have ZERO interest in such a car.

I know, I know, if I have nothing good to say about it, just STFU, so I will.  ;D ;D

While I will never, ever own such a car, I still find it fun to read up on it and actually see what some of the niche manufacturers are doing to 4 wheels, and engine, and a chassis - that's about all the Ariel Atom is  ;)

And I bet that the 1.3L rotary engine would save some weight too.  :rofl2:
